By this logic Caufield > McDavid.

Yeah, Eichel is looking to get a surgery that will have him sidelined for 3 or 4 months. After that Mtl has an elite one two punch at C the next several years with Eichel and Suzuki.

Win now mode means with Price, Petry, Gallagher, etc, etc, etc not getting any younger they are a team that could really use and elite no.1 C to help them win in their contention window.

    That's pretty straightforward.

My logic is not that Caufield is better than McDavid.

My logic is that a completely healthy Cole Caufield on an ELC would provide more value to the Habs than a 10 million dollar Jack Eichel on LTIR.

Montreal should not even think about trading for Eichel until he is cleared to play NHL hockey again.

Nor should any other team for that matter.

    Pretty straightforward.

If Marc Bergevin listened to whatever Bryan Hayes said, he would trade Caufield and whatever else the Sabres wanted for Eichel.

    Right now.

With the Habs' roster completely gutted by the Eichel trade, the Leafs would likely win night in and night out against them until Eichel finally comes back.

Buffalo will tank this season, regardless of what they get in a trade for Eichel.

With Buffalo tanking and Montreal's roster completely gutted from an Eichel trade, that's a Win-Win for the Leafs.

That's something Bryan Hayes is obviously hoping for.

What he said in the clip should come as no surprise.

And my question about being in win-now mode was rhetorical, in you case you were wondering.

It makes sense, only thing would be that it makes Jack Quinn redundant

It does not from the Habs' perspective.

Montreal will struggle to make the playoffs and Eichel will be out for the first half of the season at least.

Because there's a standoff with the Sabres on what surgery to get.

So three months of healthy Caufield is better for the Habs than possibly a decade of Eichel?

That doesn't seem short-sighted to you?

Unless you've heard something that I haven't? Will the NHL cease to exist 6 months from now?

And I really don't care about the Hayes stuff, or how the Leafs factor into it, that's all nonsense anyways.

The Habs want to hit the ground running on opening night and start winning games.

They won't be able to do that with Eichel on LTIR and no Caufield.

Any Eichel trade to Montreal can be made whichever of these comes first for the Habs:

    1. When he's close to full recovery from the surgery, assuming the standoff even ends.

    2. At the trade deadline if the Habs are fighting for a playoff spot or trying to go on another run at the Cup

    3. Right before his NMC kicks in during the Spring/Summer of 2022.

Also, the Habs will only have the Bostonian Eichel until 2026, assuming he's traded to Montreal.

    That's 5 years from now, not 10.

If things don't get off the ground for Eichel and the Habs, Eichel will just invoke his newly enacted NMC to prevent any trade from happening.

Then, he'll walk as a UFA in 2026.

    Simple.

    Nothing short-sighted about my approach.

Yes, because theres never been an American stay in Canada once they can hit UFA.

Habs have the wing depth to ease the pain of missing Caufield.

When Eichel is healthy again, it would take more than the Habs would be willing to offer.

In reality, the Habs (or any other team with the need) will likely never get a better chance to acquire a franchise C.

Habs can conceivably miss the playoffs with Caufield in the lineup, considering they're obviously more suited to playoff hockey than regular season.

    1. So, besides Caufield, what else do you think Montreal should give up for Eichel?

    As of right now?

    2. Also, will Eichel consent to a surgical procedure prescribed by Montreal's team doctors after being traded there?

Even if it's the exact same as the one prescribed by Buffalo's team doctors?

    1. That's not really the discussion we are having. But I would almost guarantee they wouldnt have to add as much to Caufield today as they will 6 months from now (or whenever he's fully healthy).

    2. Everyone in the hockey world knows what surgery Jack wants. The surgeon that Jack has got the 2nd opinion from has been interviewed (I read the article in the Athletic, not sure if it's been run elsewhere) and put it all out there. So it would be pretty foolish for a team to pick him up and start back at square one.

If a team acquires Eichel, it means they are willing to allow him to get his surgery (which according to that doctor has a shorter recovery time, and much better long term outlook).
