Description
Hertl gets extended
I see Drouin as a risk in Montreal, as he could take another leave of absence around playoff time if the pressure of playing for the Habs potentially gets to him again (assuming that it was something like this last year). In that situation you have a $5.5M player that cannot contribute.
If Drouin goes to San Jose with a LOT less pressure he could put up points to re-establish his value. Then the Sharks could either re sign the young forward or flip him for valuable assets in the rebuild. The Sharks likely aren’t a playoff team (look at their goaltending), so them tanking is good plus Drouin does not lose potential trade value by potentially underperforming in the playoffs.
Montreal takes on the bad contract of Burns so that they have to send less value to SJ for Hertl (some people ask that question every time a bad contract comes back).

When both teams dislike the trade you could say it’s fair.. but idk feels like Montreal doesn’t need Burns or his contract especially if Romanov develops nicely this year

They definitely don’t need Burns, but if they want Hertl and don’t want to give up more young assists (either drafted players or draft picks) then taking Burns’ contract from the Sharks is probably the best way to do that. They would still have money in years to come in order to extend Caufield, Suzuki and Romanov

Getting Burns with retention is OK but spending 3 RD over 4M won't help extending Hertl for 2022...
more salary would need to return like Byron or even Armia

Lehkonen would be alright, but the Jets don't have the cap space or need for him.

Certainly not cap compliant as Byron will be returning. I'm doubting Burns waives for Montreal or about 25 other cities.

Trade him and a young mediocre prospect or two or middling picks to Arizona, Buffalo, Detroit, Seattle, Ottawa, NJ, Anaheim for a player to be named later. I like Byron and what he has done for the team and what he can still do in a limited capacity, but the team I suggested above is better than the team with Byron as a 3rd or 4th liner, so he is expendable.

Of course Byron and his 3.4m is expendable. Trouble is trading him. Other teams don't want his cap hit either, and feel they can spend 3.4 X 2 better.

Sending Kulak and two 3rds for two 4ths is ridiculous. He's positive value as a 5-7th D and can play in the top 4 in a pinch.
Why are you treating his contract with 1 year and only $1.85M as a cap dump?

Adjust the Kulak trade accordingly then, it was a matter of getting his salary off the books to make the trade viable.
