Building on last years miracle run while Carey can still be an impact player

Created by: KentMcNally
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 9, 2021
Published: Sep. 9, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Seeing if they can make a run (with some luck/help) in the next year or two. It would be great to get Price a Cup if possible.
And if Shea Weber made a Kucherov-like return in the playoffs that would really help. I would not bank on that, but does anyone really know his medical status?? The guy can play through a lot of pain.
The OTTAWA, SEATTLE & DALLAS trades are cap related and the picks can be changed up if there is an issue with valuation of Montreal's outgoing players. Same with retention of salary on Byron and Armia.
Poehling is not needed if Hertl is acquired. Could be Evans rather than Poehling too. I think they may be interchangeable as 4th line centers.
The Hertl trade is based on an article seen in The Hockey Writers where they discuss 4 possible trade scenarios for Hertl. In the Montreal trade they talk about Hertl coming over with retained salary. I did not suggest this in my trade, so there is that much added to San Jose's side too.
Balanced lines, good top 4 defenceman, cap space left over to make another small move at trade deadline if necessary (that is why Jake Allen is traded- in the playoffs only Carey Price is needed...if he goes down, so do the Habs' shot at a Cup).
The moves are made with the intent of making a playoff run. There may be some long term pain here but if there is short term gain it is worth it.

Problem is, there’s long term pain, and probably still a playoff DNQ

Sharks will get max value in a Hertl trade - they have to so it will likely include an extension. I don't think MTL has the pieces we would want sorry to say

I would just not retain on Armia and keep Allen over holtby. You need to keep price fresh and holtby has shown over last few years he’s a well below average goalie whereas Allen looked good last year during regular season.

They have to get a 1st (a good 1st) and an elite prospect. The lower the 1st the better the prospect has to be. Wilson really can't accept less as the Sharks have to win a Hertl trade or the fanbase will crumble. Hertl is not only the best player on the team, he is EASILY the fan favorite (though Ferraro is coming up fast)

that trade is going to need to happen pretty soon then, No one looking to make that type of a deal at the deadline most teams want to add an expiring rental that they can live with losing in the offseason since most competitive teams have limited cap flexibility.

I was going to say "yeah maybe Ottawa would do that" until I realized the picks were going to Montreal...

The 750 K$ retention doesn't do anything for Ottawa. They're not going to spend 2 picks on getting Byron for 2 years at 2 650 000$ per season

the trade deadline usually ups a players value I'm most cases so that might be the sharks plan. see if they can make the playoffs and if not sell.
at the deadline I see Hertl going for a 1st, 2nd, and a high level prospect plus some sort of cap return.
With Montreal getting Dvorak I just don't see them in the Hertl honestly.
Dvorak is a replacement for Danault but younger with more offensive upside.
I could see Montreal offering Sharks Drouin and a 2nd for Meier at the deadline but that hinges on both players production honestly.

I could see Hertl going for much less. Nobody takes his NTC into account. You have 3 trading partners. Not all 3 will need, have room, or be willing to trade for him.
If Hertl will only agree to an extension with the team of his choice, you have 1 trading partner, or you're selling him as a rental.
If he opens up to more destinations, you're only getting rental value and he'll sign wherever he wants next year.

ups a player's rental value yes but teams that are shopping at the deadline are looking for rentals not looking to pay the price for Hertl with an extension, thats a deal that gets done in the offseason. If Hertl is dealt at the TDL it is most likely at a rental price. And fully agree i dont see the habs being in on this i feel like they checked in on the price already and decided to go the Dvorak route.

all very true,
however if Hertl requests a trade I only assume cup contenders will come looking, giving him the pick of those contenders, and I would bet an extension will be a huge part of trade discussions.
all of this is hypothetical and we can all be wrong, or one of us is right. we wont know until the cards are laid out.

Yes I do See Mtl in the race... has they have GREAT A+ LD Prospect or A- Wingers added with the very versatile guy like Lehkonen or Armia and 2023 1st should fetch it
Option one: Lehkonen, Ghule, 2023-1st
Option two: Armia, Ylonen, 2023-1st

With 750k retained on Byron, you can dump him for a 2nd + 5th

You get future considerations coming back
