How come? Hertl for Monahan, MEP and a 1st seems like fine value, getting Simek off the books opens up off season options. Calgary's first could be a lottery pick this year, San Jose could pick twice in the top 15 of a deep draft, Hertl could walk from either team, Monahan has another year and could a great piece to flip retained with San Jose's cap space.
Those are my reasons that I think San Jose would, what don't you agree with?

Obviously on the Calgary side, they get the better C for a year they're trying to compete.

The baseline for Hertl is a top prospect and a 1st. He's not being traded for veterans. The very act of trading Hertl is a sign of admitting a rebuild. IF we wanted to remain competitive Hertl would not be moved.

Monahan is younger than Hertl, fits a timeline for the sharks better, MEP is a great prospect that many have on an untouchable list for Calgary but he's similar to what the Flames have a lot of, plus the first that could be a lottery pick, that's more than what you are stating above. If San Jose is getting a prospect and a pick from a team like Boston, Vegas, Tampa etc. it's going to be a bottom 10 pick in the draft.
In the description above it says "San Jose starts slow" lets say they lose 10 of 15 out of the gate, they don't have a good enough roster to recover from that.

This is all moot. You miss the point of trading Hertl for SJ. Monahan is a whopping year younger.

I am not wrong. Who do you think knows SJ better? I watch every sharks game and follow them more than any other sports team. Have you even seen a game? LOL

Hahaha okay bub. As I said, I THINK you are wrong, agree to disagree, that's a pretty simple concept. Watched a ton of Sharks games, have family in Morgan Hill, we go to Sharks games when we can, have them to Calgary to go to games, watch them virtually together all last year. Yes sir, seen a bunch! Probably watched 35 of the 56 last year.

I would rather keep Monahan and the 1st, Hertl isn't a difference maker for the current roster

Oh I disagree, I think that Hertl coming into this roster with this coach is a big plus for the Flames, nearly 50/50 splits for OZ and DZ starts, significantly better two way C, P/60. adds another PK guy to the line up, he's a better fit for a team that is going to have to win a ton of 2-1 games.

Agree to disagree then. I like Hertl but he has less team control and as I said above is not going to make a relevant difference over Monahan.

I'm not sure you realize how many PK guys are on this team right now. Excluding Hertl there are 7 strong PK forwards on your above roster and that doesn't include that Monahan has been playing PK under Sutter or that Gawdin is likely quite capable as well. Not to mention we have Pelletier in the pipeline who is well known for his defensive game as a prospect. What Calgary needs is more offense and Hertl does not offer that over Monahan, especially at the cost of a 1st for 1 less year of term

Hertl 100% would be a difference maker. the only reason we are even thinking of letting him go is because of stupid Kane and the fact Hertl won’t play with him and we have no choice but to keep kane right now. Hertl’s metrics is are off the charts! give him top line mates and he will make your first line elite and playoff ready! plus he is a beast in the playoffs.

A difference maker if added for free sure? Not at the cost of Monahan and a 1st. Hertl is a good player but you are trolling if you think the difference between Calgary being a contender or not is going from Monahan to Hertl. Eichel on the other hand, that's a different story. He's a truly elite difference maker that I would gladly pay the upgrade cost for

Eichel is hurt and hasn’t even had surgery on his neck yet. so you will be giving up 4 1st or equivalent for a year of 10 mil in it and 3 years after that at 10 mil with no guaranty he’s going to be the same player…. I wouldn’t pay that (and apparently neither will anyone in NHL cause he still hasn't been traded) but to each their own.

He is expected to be healthy by December and has 5 years remaining on his contract, your math does not check out. As for Eichel's uncertain future, thats fine, if it fails then we can rebuild properly but I doubt it will

neck surgery to fuse vertebrae is 4-6 month recovery
your right it’s 5 years not 4, but still your giving up a lot to get him, does he make a team that much better than Hertl would?
plus hertl next deal would be around 7.25-7.5 mil and 3.5 (2.75 plus min deal of .75) mil is a top 9 or a solid D man.

again if i was a GM i would pay less take Hertl and use the difference to make sure i have more depth.
but everyone has a different idea and only time will tell who is right and who is wrong.

He's not getting the fusion, he's getting the replacement which takes 6 weeks to recover and 8-12 weeks to play NHL hockey.

As for does Eichel make the team better than Hertl? When he returns marginally. Eichel is a far better player than Hertl

I'm not doubting his skill level. but Hertl is a known playoff performer and an above average top line center, he is not Elite and Eichel is, but neck injury's never really go away, so I would be wary.
I'll say this I hated the Karlsson trade and the sharks are paying for it, I wouldn't want to be the team that pays that much for Eichel and he not preform like he was capable of.

I get what you are saying about Eichel, I don't think saying Hertl performs well in the playoffs is a good reason to trade Monahan for him though as SM is pretty solid in the post season as well. Hertl is also not an above average top line center, he is definitely an above average 2C but definitely not 1C

Calgary is desperate to stay relevant with a team that continues to underperform. Hertl with retention could be done but Calgary would have to go out and get the young center prospect that SJ will eventually get from someone on the east coast. i'd love to get calgary's 1st rounder in the lotto next year.

Yes, just not Monahan.
