Calgary Flames signed Erik Gudbranson (1 Year / $1,950,000 AAV)

Was this a good signing?

The cap isn't the biggest issue. A vet making under 2 mil isn't the end of the world. The issue is he's an actively bad defenseman

I'm mildly surprised that Guds isn't a Ranger. They're the ones that got wrecked by Tom Wilson last season and then signed Goodrow/Blais/Nemeth/Reaves. Who's the boogeyman in Alberta?

Literally any contract for Gudbranson is bad. Hell, I'd trust Stone as the everyday 3RD over Gudbranson. Why does CGY feel the need to stock up on size?

Calgary wanted to complete their collection of tough dudes surrounding their crown jewel Matt Tkachuk. They already had Lucic/Ritchie/Zadorov, now they have Guds. Hockey skills are optional.

Unless you're Tony DeAngelo... (I know, unique circumstances, but he's still an extremely talented player)

Also, this isn't even the most egregious example of that. At least the Guds deal is only a year. Tucker Poolman got a 4x$2.5M AAV from Jim Benning...

Hockey parents, get your kids to shoot right-handed.

Fun fact: I shoot right handed.

Another fun fact: My defence is better than my offence.

Last fun fact: That doesn’t mean anything.

battle of Alberta going up against the Ceci Keith pairing. HNIC ratings will be through the roof

It's actually quite pathetic when you realize that the TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS have the best d in Canada. Really bad d cores up north.

I would say the Jets D core is the best in Canada, Morrisey, Dillion, Schmidt, Pionk, Demelo, as their set and forget top 5. Leafs dont have that deep of a top 5. But yes to your point Canada D Cores arent as deep

Jets have a good case as well, yes. The jets best d man aren't as good as Toronto's but the jets have better depth.

I mean, I like physical players, but like, why do you need your whole roster like that?

I think this is a signing everyone was dead wrong about. Seems under Sutter Gudbranson has found his game and maybe even his permeant home

Flames have been one of the leagues most pleasant surprises. Good defensively, and the scoring has been spread out among its forwards. I'm impressed. Leafs/Flames Cup finals.nod
