Pens trade Carolina

Created by: LetsGoPens69
Team: 2021-22 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 11, 2021
Published: Sep. 11, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
-Carolina gets a LW prospect in Puustinen that is coming over to AHL this season and played super well
In Ligga the last 2 seasons(21 goals and 41 points in 51 games last season at 21 years old; 8th in Liiga in goals).

-They get Pettersson, 25 year old, good defensive, D-man, that can also move the puck well and contribute offensively enough.

They save 1.25M in cap space this season.

-And get Clayton Phillips, another young LHD, that is playing in NCAA still. 3rd round pick.

Looking at Carolina’s team/prospects, they are weakest at LHD and low on LW and LHD prospects too.

V.Trocheck is a 1 year rental and is from Pittsburgh originally. Pens need/want gritty, two-way Center. Trocheck fits the bill and is a RH stick that the Pens need for Face-offs.

Pens don’t have to give up any draft capital, but a top 4-5 prospect in their system in Puustinen, a former 3rd round pick in C.Phillips, and a top 4 Defensive D-man that pairs well with Marino(But PO-J is ready to step in at LHD on the Big Pens).

And they retain just 500K for 2 more seasons after this season and V.Thocheck contract comes off the books after this season.
Trades
CAR
  1. Pettersson, Marcus ($525,175 retained)
  2. Phillips, Clayton [Reserve List]
  3. Puustinen, Valtteri
Additional Details:
Pens retain 500k of Pettersson salary so Carolina gets him at 3.5M per for 2 more seasons after this season. He just turned 25.

Hurricanes are in a win now mode and would rather lose Trocheck in UFA after a playoff run than trade him as a rental

Ya, u are probably right. It’s a pipe dream for me.

I just figured they have to sign Nino, Necas, Trocheck, JK, E.Bear all after this season. And they have Suzuki that can take his Center spot. And they need the cap space. Saves them 1.25M this season.

And DeAngelo at 3rd pairing RHD is a wildcard. Atleast they could put Pettersson/I.Cole out as the 3rd pairing. And if DeAngello hits then great. But chances arnt likely of that.

And they would have Pettersson at 3.5per for the next 2 seasons after this season too. That was really my thinking. And seeing that Carolina is low on LW and LHD prospects. And Puustinen would be a great get for them.

Lol. I bet most people would say it’s an overpay for an one year rental. If they trade him around the deadline, they would get a late 1st round pick at best.

Puustinen and Pettersson(Pettersson at 3.5Mper), plus C.Phillips is alot more than a late 1st round pick. Plus Carolina saves 1.25M in cap space this season.

Plus, they have Pettersson for 2 more seasons after this season(and Puustinen and Phillips). The Pens add 1.25M to their cap this season and 500K in retained salary for 2 more seasons.

*if you go to the Puustinen link 1st you can just click on the Clayton Phillips link, at the top of the page, on Puustinen’s top 25 under 25 page(the 2nd link).
