You have Hughes and Hischier. Why do you need Petterson?

Hughes and Hischier combined for 42 points last year and NJ finished 29th in the league.

From what I understand they need help in the bottom 9, Wood is super fast and scored at a pretty good clip last year.

No thanks. Miles Wood is a good player, but with Foegele on the third line, I don’t see a fit. I don’t feel like putting a 20-30 point gatherer on the fourth line, especially at that cost. I would rather just put Benson, or Shore there instead.

I like Wood but two issues here: the Oilers are out of cap space (once Yamamoto is signed) and they just went out and acquired Hyman and Foegele for the LW position, both of whom scored better (P/60 at 5v5) than Wood last year / last 2 years.

My guess is edmonton inquired about wood but went with Mclovin instead.

Hughes was the best player on the team last year. He needs better wingers
Nico was injured for most of the season
No need for EP and not worth the cost

A team that finished bottom 5 in goals for has no need for a 22 year old franchise forward, interesting.

I should rephrase that
Devils don't need EP based on how much he would cost. The Canucks are going to match any offersheet under 12M. Devils would need to offerhseet EP for $12M+, which wouldn't be worth it.
There are better deals out there
