$14.9M in cap space for next offseason including Hertl's extension and salary cap ceiling increasing to $82.5M. Habs should easily be able to resign Suzuki and either Chiarot or another top 4LD and Evans. Resigning the current or new 3rd pairing defenseman + depth will likely cost too much for the Habs to be able to retain Lehkonen. He can be moved for some assets. When Caufield's ELC is up, both Byron and Allen's contracts will have expired in addition to the cap likely rising by another million. That money combined, with Caufield's ELC contract free's up $8.155M. They should at least be able to bridge him with that until other contracts expire. Someone like Armia could also be traded if it is needed to free up extra cap space.

I think the additions of Hertl, Dvorak, Hoffman, Savard and Subban takes this team to another level. Perreault and Paquette are nice for depth as well. I don't think losing Weber will be easy to cope with, but I think Savard and Subban can share that workload that he leaves behind. Montreal's forward group is better than last years by a lot in my mind. They might not have the elite level talent of the best players in the league, but their depth is pretty much unmatched by anyone.

I think the east is going to be really tough this year, and Montreal making these types of additions would only make it harder to predict. Nothing in life is guaranteed, but I would like MTL's chance to make the playoffs with this roster. I would say that they are better than Boston, Florida and maybe even Toronto. Tampa is a different animal although they lost their entire 3rd line. If this team is in the playoffs, I for sure wouldn't want to face them.

Devils retain $4.5M and receive a 2nd round pick.

Third party team retains $2.25M and receive 6th round pick.

Subban's actual salary is only $2M which would mean that a third party team would only have to retain $500K in actual dollars. Any team with $2.25M in cap space should be all over that IMO.

MTL have Guhle, Norlinder, Harris and Struble coming up as LD prospects. I think they are fine.

Devils would pass. Eating $4.5m and having to find another RHD doesn't make sense for the Devils. I could have seen it before the UFA season was over as they could have found a penalty kill specialist, but that ship has sailed.

A trade like this would only happen as a deadline deal, but I can definitely see it happening.

They would only eat $1M in actual dollars and the Devils are blessed with cap space.

have to find another RHD? Subban is a replacement level player that will play 3rd line next year.

Definitely wouldn't call Subban a replacement level player. I think he still is effective in the NHL, only not playing 22 minutes a night. Take his ice time down to between 18-19 minutes, and I think he can become quite solid. As for a replacement for him, There are a few FA available in Vatanen, Demers and Gustafsson. Hamilton and Severso will eat up the majority of the minutes anyways so that 3RD doesn't need to be a superstar by any imagination.

that's what I mean, finding a 3rd pair RD won't be hard. Jaros is an internal solution and I think he'd be fine on the 3rd pair.

Disagree. Florida wins the division easily imo. Maybe theyre better than boston but i dont believe in MTLs goaltending. This team doesnt make the playoffs in the east.

Easily? I think that is disrespectful to Tampa, Toronto and Boston. While I think Florida did improve greatly during the offseason, their goaltending is an even bigger question mark than MTL's. I have no doubt that Knight is a phenomenal talent, but banking on him might be risky. I would feel more comfortable with Allen in MTL that has the track record. This is if Bobrovsky fathers again and Price is hurt. I respectfully disagree with you.

Is signing Hertl long term wise? Suzuki might be entitled to a big contract next season.

Fair enough. Im a lot more confident in FLAs roster than anyone elses tho.
