They seem like pretty similar players with Eller on the wrong side of 30. Not sure why the Leafs would gamble with the age.

Don't think the Leafs are at a point where picks make a big impact. They havn't really traded players they cared about for picks without ulterior motives (see cap space). They are a team who wants to be as good as it can for the next few years. Taking on a 32 year old rather than a 27 doesn't seem to gel with that. Its not the value thats the problem, its just where the teams are at right now.

Which is why I don't really understand this from the Caps point of view either. Ovi isn't going to play like he doesn't age forever. Their goal should be to be as good as possible this season rather than looking forward like the Leafs. Last season, Eller was the better player of these 2 and will likely be again this year. I wouldn't make that bet on next season but next season isn't as big a worry for the Capitals as it is the Leafs.

I think the whole "we need to get younger" thing is more related to the guys who are slowing down, not perfectly productive players like Eller
