Tkachuk is not worth 8M

Created by: GMan25

Initial Creation Date: Sep. 15, 2021

Description
I am a big fan of Tkachuk, but I cannot see him getting more than 8M, especially if Landeskog only got 7M. I also think Svech getting 7.75M for 8 years, Brady should only be getting 7M aav.

If someone can explain the rules of how to structure contracts, I think this would be a fair deal, 1 4.5
2 3.5
3 5.5
4 6.5
5 7

Here's what I posted June 28th in an ACGM thread
https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/2505396

=====

Brady's contract was difficult to determine. I originally thought Brady should receive what Chabot received, but I was comparing a #1D with a top6 winger. I like Brady, I think he should be Captain, but I asked myself, how much extra pay does being Captain get? None, of course. He will eventually be passed by Stützle on the depth chart, but will still deserve to be paid accordingly.

I then thought about PLD, who, in his final ELC season, was a year older...
PLD 18-31-49 in 70 games (0.70 ppg)
Brady 17-18-36 in 56 games (0.64 ppg)

Using the $5MM x 2, and the final season $6.65MM of PLD's contract, I considered this for Brady for eight seasons

$3.35MM
$6.65MM
$7MM
$7MM
$7MM
$8MM
$8MM
$8MM

$55MM over 8 seasons is an AAV of $6.875MM, which is why I finally settled on $7MM X 8

I still think it will cost more

oh boy....

u realize Tkachuk is only 22 right?

the rumor is 8x8, meaning the contract is buying up all of his prime years till 30.. thus OTT is gambling that he'll be worth 8+ mill in a couple of years which is a safe bet imo

i think we can all agree Svech and Landeskog took team friendly deals but there's no reason for Tkachuk to do the same

Svechnikov signed that contract because Carolina is a low tax state plus they have a winning culture. Using him as a comparable doesn't really work

Also Tkachuk is a bigger part of Ottawa’s forward group than Svechnikov is. He’s more needed

I think he's worth 8x6.75m because he's realistically going to be their 2LW and Stutzle should surpass Brady's production and spot on the depth chart by the end of his ELC. But 8x8m is the price of being the original guy to give Sens fans hope by being one of the hardest working players in the league and actually forcing Melnyk's wallet open and, soon enough, he'll be their captain. I'm fully aware of how poorly this is worded.

This is how I would break up the $56MM, $7MMx8

$4MM - RFA year
$6MM - RFA year
$7MM - RFA year
$7MM - RFA year
$8MM - UFA year
$8MM - UFA year
$8MM - UFA year
$8MM - UFA year

I have been hoping for a 8 years x 7 M$ contract for Brady for a while but it still hasn't happened. I wonder when they started negotiations because it should have started at the moment it was possible. I am under the impression that Dorion is a bit the "last minute" type

That being said, 8 x 7.0 is probably unlikely now, but 7.5 x 8 years could be IF Brady doesn't absolutely want a bridge (which I think he does)
