Don't know how having Edmundson over Reilly is an improvement.
Trading Kerfoot gives the Leafs absolutely no centre depth.
Gee, what's so special about Patrick over Mikheyev\?

I think that's the closest Rielly trade I've seen that's realistic in terms of value to this point. That said, I don't think MTL makes this trade simply because they're trading a cost-controlled solid dman for a rental. Now, you swap him out with Chiarot? I think you're closer. TOR would have a better chance financially of re-signing Chiarot.

The NJ trade just wouldn't work for NJ IMO....

NJ isn't moving Graves, not for that return. Graves is definitely a better dman than Dermott. Now, Kerfoot for Wood? Wood is definitely a fan favorite and gives NJ that grit element, but bringing in Kerfoot allows them to have a solid 3C and Zacha can stay at wing, so if you amended something around that? I could see potential.

Patrick is probably a lateral move to replace Kerfoot. There's nothing really special about Patrick over Mikheyev aside from age and pedigree. I personally think Patrick tops out at a solid 3C, which isn't bad, but him being 22 and a former 2nd overall, I think the ceiling is higher for him at this point than Mikheyev.

Edumundson isn't an improvement over Rielly in terms of offense, but he is in terms of defense and he's cost-controlled at $3.5M for three seasons.

Did u not see see Jones and Risto got in return- as expiring deals. This deal isn’t even close to being Reilly’s trade value

But the point of the post, was to make the Leafs better, and the Leafs are still in a win mode, so this makes them worse.
The Leafs don't know Edmundson long term as their LHD seems secure even without UFA Reilly in 22/23. Patrick certainly has more upside than UFA MIkeheyev, but the trade probably doesn't help the Leafs this year. Kerfoot is a dependable centre, which the Leafs lack in NHL depth. Kampf and his one goal last season is not 3C, and even Spezza did not play much at centre last season. le
I really don't understand any post from a positional point of view that trades Kerfoot and doesn't have a capable centre as a replacement.

"Why would team x ever consider that"

Is over used here but applies 100% to that Rielly deal

It doesn't even save much cap for Toronto 😑

I feel like we've heard those kind of things before regarding players and it didn't matter. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I personally don't put a ton of stock into stuff like that.

Patrick would/could be that suitable replacement with more upside. Look, I'm not saying I agree with the trades for either side, but I can see the reasoning behind them.

Very different situations.

EDIT: My overall point is this was closer than most deals on here. Leafs fans have him getting multiple firsts, 2nds and prospects. Crazy trades.

makes sense that its not even close since Rielly is not Seth Jones by any stretch of the imagination. Its a garbage deal 100% leafs would never consider it, but Rielly is not a comparable to Jones, if he was the leafs would probably make it out of the first round every once in a while.

How was it different situations ? It feels like the leafs get the short end of the stick on every situation. U can’t tell me Reilly’s not better than both of those two dmen.

Are u kidding me? Do u actually think Seth Jones is a good dmen?? He’s an average top 4 guy and every stat proves it. He’s on one of the worst deals in the league. If u think he’s better than Reilly, you prolly don’t know the slightest about advanced stats.

No, I misspoke. My point was in contrast the regular trades I see on here from leafs fans it's closer. Generally we see whacky trades that includes like two 1sts, a very good prospect, a very good roster player and sometimes more. Not to mention regularly moving him to teams that don't have room for him on the roster.

thanks for the good laugh to start my day. Never said i though seth jones was a good dman, just that he is better than Rielly.
Rielly isnt a top pairing dman on any real contender and yes Jones is the better dman, the contract is another story theres not many dman that should be making 9 mil or over you could look at the top 10 highest paid dman in the league and probably only 2 or 3 are actually worth the deal they are on.

I think it depends on the team and the market at the time. I think the Leafs missed the boat on moving him. If they do/did want to move him, it's too late. Teams have already shored up their major holes and right now everyone else is just shoring up depth.

If this was a few months ago? I'd say a 1st + a good prospect is fair. Possibly adding a decent depth player for salary purposes if needed.

I can't see the Leafs moving him at the deadline unless they have a secondary move to adequately replace him, so in general I think the Reilly trade-ship has sailed. The Leafs might be able to get a little something for his rights after the season is over.

Jones is definitely overrated, but I still view him as a very good #2 dman. He's much more complete than Rielly. Rielly is a black hole defensively. Rielly definitely brings excellent offense, so there is major value in that, but he's not worth the same return as Jones.

Ya makes sense, doesn’t make sense for a contending team to move a top 4 guy, unless they think Sandin can replace him.
