What if Colorado had gotten Brady

Description
Continuation of my attempt to explore what things would have been like if Ottawa chose to give up their 2018 pick instead of 2019. Ottawa side is here: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/513387?post_id=2688259

First and foremost, I'm not going down the road of what if the Avs took Zadina or someone else (even though that was a possibility). It's Brady all the way for this one. I'm also going to assume the team still re-signs Landeskog, even though it's a valid question as to whether they would have if they had Tkachuk.

That aside, here is my attempt to see how the dominos fall in the alternate universe when Colorado picked 4th in 2018 instead of 2019.

Timmins becomes a bit more important without Byram. Thus, I don't think he would have been included in the Kuemper trade. And with the increased cost of keeping Brady, maybe they couldn't even afford Kuemper and his salary anyway.

I went after Vanecek here, but it could also be Nedeljkovic. In this world, I think Colorado would have been well aware they couldn't afford to extend Grubauer and been more ahead of the game on one of these guys. Everything else stays the same, as I don't see a huge need to change up draft picks or anything like that.

One more note. I think it's reasonably safe to assume Brady would have gotten fewer minutes and perhaps had slightly less production as a result, thereby making the contract reasonable. It's all a guessing game though, and this didn't happen so I'm not gonna think too much harder.

Probably would be better off today. Depends on how Byram develops long term though to see who wins.

Its a fun what if though....

Personally im not a huge Brady fan, his numbers are a bit of smoke and mirrors, I think Byram long term will be the better outcome, Its so hard to get top flight top 4 dmen, so if you have one naturally in your system, you are Gucci

Was Colorado the only team that would’ve picked Byram that high or no? Personally I was really high on Zegras and Cozens in that draft.

byram was the consensus Top 3 pick. Chicago taking Dach at 3 was a bit of a shocker as they were locked for him what it seemed like a few weeks going into the draft.

Avs were looks more at do they take Dach or Turcotte at the time

WSH has two other NHL goalies. That's a generous offer. Have to balance the cap, though, if it's with Washington.

It's tough to say. The forward group looks amazing, but the back end is certainly weaker without Byram and Kuemper. Either way it's a good team.

I am a Brady fan and think he'd look great in Colorado. Byram is gonna take a huge step this year though (imo) and make us wonder what the team was ever like without him. Can't wait to see it.

Was thinking they beat the Caps to the punch and make the trade with Seattle. It's still a generous offer (imo) but the team wasn't exactly in a position of strength.

The Size and physicality police in the Avs fandom are going to be shocked to see how physical Byram is and how polished he is defensively already. The cries of "we need a big beefy dman to compete" are going to quiet up pretty fast

Right. WSH got a good deal from Seattle because SLE didn't want to lose someone else on waivers, just to wait and see on three goalies, and WSH called quickly with something Seattle wanted. Absolutely.

I think with just half a mil in cap space, WSH would probably rather have a Johansson or Miska than Compher. Kaut and a 2nd is a great start, either way.

I made a post on this very topic about 5 weeks ago.

https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/2711968

I believe it was Coga16 who suggested that Colorado might have taken Zadina instead of Tkachuk at 4th overall in 2018.

The Colorado Avalanche have a history of drafting good quality players from the Halifax Mooseheads and Zadina was playing for them at the time he was drafted by Detroit.

So, I don't think it would be a total shocker if Colorado passed on Tkachuk and drafted Zadina instead.

This is how I think the 2018 draft would unfold if Colorado had our 1st from 2018 instead of 2019:

1. Colorado drafts Filip Zadina at 4th overall.

2. Arizona then drafts Brady Tkachuk at 5th overall because I got the sense they wanted him more than Barrett Hayton.

Evidence that would support this would be the portion of this video here between the 8:30 and the 11:20 marks

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRyebwAnngY&t=6s

Also, Brady Tkachuk's Keith played for the Coyotes and they both lived in Scottsdale for a brief period of time, so there's that.

As for the 2019 draft, I believe Ottawa would have passed on Bowen Byram and pick a centreman like Alex Turcotte.

The LA Kings would then be left with Byram at 5th overall.

For sure. Either way I don’t think it’s bad.
