The Gus Bus Comes to Long Island

Description
Copy and pasted my reply to a post on another Isles ACGM, sums up my feelings on Gus pretty well:

You would think that but he's a different type of player than Leddy. He's much better on the power play since he's actually a threat to shoot, which Leddy wasn't. He's more aggressive in the offensive zone 5v5 too. Defensively, yes, he's a liability, perhaps more so than Leddy. With Leddy I felt it was more he's just a low IQ player, while Gus just didn't really care about defense (relative to how much he cares about offense). I actually think he'll see some improvement defensively under Trotz if he can have it drilled into him and be trusted with a greater role defensively, whereas Leddy was just kinda incapable of playing that role.

If all goes well, there's no reason why Gustafsson can't be a competent second pairing defenseman imo, who makes up for his defensive deficiencies with production on the power play. I know that sounds like Leddy, but I think the way Gus will go about doing it (if he makes the team of course) will be much different.

Overall, it doesn't hurt to at least give him a look. He seems like the antithesis of a "Trotz player," but then again, so does Mat Barzal. Maybe the Isles' system will be good for him

Yeah he’s nothing like Leddy - the key for Gustafsson is he needs to play with a D who’s above average defensively and can win puck battles. He’s very good at generating offense (if he’s allowed)

Leddy couldn’t generate offense or play defense

Yes , Gustafson had good with John Merrill in MTL - the difference between Leddy and Gustafsson is Gustafsson can generate offense , Leddy can’t. Both are pretty bad defensively

Imo, Mayfield is going to have to step up a bit this year. There were points last season where I was just as frustrated with him as Leddy. He had a good playoffs though, so maybe that's something to build on

I wouldn't get too hung up on the ice time. He was way overextended in Chicago, which exacerbated some of his issues defensively. He put up a lot of points yes, but I think continuing to reel him in is the best course of action.

Agreed but another thing i want mayfield to do a lot more is use his shot. Its very underrated but he almost never shoots. I think adding another aspect to his game will help. A tough physical defenseman who has a nice shot is a lot better than a defense only useless in the O-zone defenseman.

Totally agree, this was one of my gripes last season too. I get that offense isn't really his game and maybe it was amplified because Leddy wasn't all that great imo, but I feel like he could stand to put the puck towards the net a little more often than he has been
