I'm not a sens fan , just playing around. I think though to bring back Chara they would have to overpay. If they can get a player like Pettersson then you worry about those contracts after. maybe some players need to be moved out for other assets.

It's interesting, but if the Canucks sign Hughes to, say, $5 million per for two seasons, they would technically have the money to match this ONLY if Ferland is placed on LTIR. They'll have to move money once he comes back (which is easier said then done).

Vancouver matches.

Ottawa will need to cough up 4 firsts in draft pick compensation for Vancouver to reconsider.

Ferland has publicly stated he will not play in the NHL again. They don’t have to make space available for him to return

It's not question if Melnyk want to pay 10m, it's whether the Sens should do it. It's a lottery first rounder, maybe more, and a total 4 first rounder plus 10m in cap, that could be spend elsewhere.

While that's really sad for Ferland, it works out for the Canucks.

It’s crazy that even after paying compensation the sens would still have 3 picks in the top 93 of this draft. To those saying it’s a lottery pick I wouldn’t be so sure. Adding Pettersson to this line would have them competing for a playoff spot imo

So if Ottawa offers 12X7 and Vancouver matches, then they offer Hughes 8X7, Canucks wouldnt have room

Even if Hughes was offersheet eligible, what would likely happen is the Canucks would work out and extension for Hughes during the week they have for matching Pettersson’s OS and the have them both signed at the same time

Just NO to any Offer Sheet

I don't want Ottawa to play with that, it's placing a really big target on your back and after what happened this summer with Montreal/Carolina, I think we won't see an OS for years

Actually, only Bergevin had done OS recently (Point/Aho). The last time, it was the Flames in 2013 with ROR

It's almost like an unwritten rule. Teams simply don't want to do it so nobody does it to them

Not sure why the Sens would want Chara? No need at all at LD and Z is 44 y/o. Melnyk doesn't like to throw away money

I admit that the forward group would be very hard to play against

I looked at the Canucks cap situation about a week ago, and I figure they have about $17MM they can reasonably finagle out of their current roster for Pettersson and Hughes.

The Sens can probably add one big ticket player and not mess with their own RFA's contracts down the road too much, but it would start the cap dance a lot sooner, and losing those 1st round picks also reduces potential ELC's that could help with the cap crunch in 4-6 years.

Totally unnecessary comment to @TM11, I didn't realize Hughes was 10.2(c) or that a 10.2(c) can't be offersheeted until this thread. knowing a piece of knowledge or not knowing a piece of knowledge has nothing to do with needing to use your head.
