Opening night v Tampa

Created by: Pens2000
Team: 2021-22 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 17, 2021
Published: Sep. 17, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If they sign Boyle for the year I think this is what their opening night lineup should look like. The guys in scratches will battle out for the bottom spots. This looks extremely rough but I think it’ll be a good test for the depth guys

I wonder if we could see Poulin, Hallander or Legare get a stint with all the injuries.

Knowing this team and injuries I can definitely see them slotting in at least once this season. I’d bet on it

They likely need time in the AHL, but I think it would be good to see them all get a couple of games until Sid comes back.

Very true. I'm sure the Pens lose someone else by opening night.

I’m liking the lines being:

Zucker/Carter/Kappy
Guentzel/E-Rod/Rust
ZAR/Blueger/McGinn
Heinen/Boyle/?????

The final spot is up for grabs b/ween Poulin, Legare, Hallander, Lafferty, Zohorna, OConnor, Angello, D.Simon.

When Sid comes back:

Guentzel/Sid/Rust
Zucker/Carter/Kappy
ZAR/Blueger/McGinn
Heinen/Boyle/E-Rod

Or If any of the young guys: Poulin, Legare, Hallander, Zohorna, OConnor, step up, then obviously get them in the line-up.

I wish the Pens would have signed Gaudreau instead of E-Rod and D.Simon.

signing gaud would have "solved" the 4c problem in the interim. even the middle 6 winger placement. i think erod playing with guentzel and rust is good for him considering he played pretty well with top 6 mins last year

I think that lineup would be spread out more and harder to play against b/c u can only send your top D line out against one of those lines. If Guentzel/Carter/Rust form the 1st line then it’s an easy match-up for another teams top D-line.

But don’t get it twisted; Guentzel and Rust will still play big minutes. Sully can obviously mix and match and does so anyways. But trouting out those lines would be the best bet until Sid gets back/If Sid misses beginning of the season.

I’m also super interested in seeing if one of Poulin, Legare, Hallander, Zohorna, OcConnor forces their hand and wins a roster spot. Even Puustinen who is coming over to the US and has a camp invite and will play in the AHL most likely. But he could also force their hand and show he’s ready and can play at the NHL level.
