I mean maybe he was adamant on taking a 1 year deal. I think it was always going to be 1 or 2 years. Also, depending on performance and fit, one of Pulju or Yamo can be used as part of a goalie trade next summer with Hyman and Foegele who can go to the RW, and Holloway/Benson/Lavoie filling LW spots in the middle 6 soon. For this season, it means we have more room at the deadline. I like that.

Finally a proper 3rd line! They can all skate, play physical and there’s a good mix of scoring and defence, a good recipe to not getting caved in night after night

A true checking line with at least the ability to score and have a shot at coming out even on the scoresheet. Haven't entered a season with that kind of legitimate expectation for a while - it's always been a mere hope that the bottom 6 treads water at all.

I think if nurse plays 40 or more games they’ll definitely make the playoffs. The combination of skill depth forwards and puck moving D means this team will be able to outscore a lot of mistakes during the regular season. I also think at least one of Smith, Koskinen or Stalock should be able to provide decent goaltending at every point, so I don’t believe that position is as weak as some suspect.

Lol literally not one defenceman on your team is good at defence. You also need that to be a good hockey team. Keep telling urself that ur goaltending tandem of a 39 year old and koskinen is capable of winning you games consistently, definitely not in front of that defence at least

I’m pretty adamant that Yamo will be traded before next season. Puljujarvi is the obvious choice to me right now he’s more durable and a better forechecker although Yamo is a very very good forechecker.

Hey I’d put Russel and nurse in the ‘good’ category that’s 2/6 so jokes on you.

And again all 3 of smith, Koskinen and stalock have put up decent numbers for long stretches recently, they can’t all be bad lol

It is indeed nice to make it. Good news that the Oil have made it the last couple of years. Nice for the Oil to be in the easiest division in the league though. Sorry the Leafs will likely face more competition to make it in the Atlantic.

If you wanted to give real reasons for why the Oil are *worse* set up than last season for your prediction, I'm all ears. But they are at least as good on paper as the team that made the playoffs by a wide margin in a better division than this one.

Fair. I'm just glad Yamo wasn't lost for just a 2nd on an offer sheet. Would like him to be used to bring in something useful.

Your maple leafs have a better defence and goaltending tandem? Give me a break. Who are you to talk down about Duncan Keith and the nhl’s points leader on defence?

In: Keith, Ceci, Bouch (full season).
Out: Larsson, Jones, a dozen games of Kulikov.

The changes overall are a wash imo. The same goalies won in front of the defense last season - give me a real reason why anything has changed.

A Roloson style deadline deal would of course be the best for the playoffs, but regular season, I am not concerned.

Yes. The leafs easily do have a better goaltending tandem and defence, but this is aho the oilers, not the leafs. Keith has been bad for the past couple years now. Barrie is terrible defensively. Cmon man

Just gonna leave out bear… anyway, if you had kept all those guys and let go of Barrie, the defence would be middle of the pack to slightly above that. Ceci was sheltered last year on the bottom pair, Barrie is awful defensively, and Keith hasn’t been good since like 2017. Larsson was the glue of that blue line, bear was a promising young defensive dman, and Jones was a solid bottom pair guy who could’ve grown into more with better ice time and teammates. Idk how u can be comfortable with that tandem either.
