Three NJ Trade proposals I wish would go away

Created by: Opie
Team: 2021-22 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 16, 2021
Published: Sep. 19, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
QHughes: Doesn't make sense for either team. Vancouver has absolutely no reason to move him & therefore, NJ would need to overpay to such a degree that it would strip NJ of the very prospects they need to move forward.

Eichel: Why take a chance on his neck (& contract), when they have Hughes & Hischier? Is he a better player, sure ... but again, why take that risk at this point in NJs rebuild? Additionally, the asking price, similar to the case with QHughes, strips NJ of the prospects they need.

Subban (going anywhere): There is only $2 mil left on his contract. At that price, he's a tremendous value & a real asset with the match ups he will now receive on the third pair. There really is no reason for NJ to move him prior to trade deadline, save for an insane overpay. All proposals I see are for a middling return. Trading PK early in the season just doesn't make any sense for NJ.

Can we at the VERY least agree to stop the Subban trades until SOMEWHAT closer to the deadline when the team knows they are in or out?

Meier to NJD for Holtz not even an honorable mention? 😉

Even if Subban only makes 2 mil, you can’t just wish away a 9 mil cap hit. He’s got far less value than you think, otherwise he would already be in Arizona or Ottawa.

this. the teams buying at the deadline are often right up against the cap. even at 50% retained he’s still 4.5mil.

Forgot about that Meier trade and his crap contract. That one needs to go on the list too.

The cap is irrelevant for NJ, they don't need or want to wish it away. The point is, at $2 mil & on the third pair, he's a fantastic value in NJ ... no reason to trade him (until the deadline & even then, only if they are out of the playoffs)

The point is that they would want to keep him. The cap is irrelevant to NJ.

It’s one thing to say they shouldn’t trade him but it’s another to say that he’s valuable. He brings the value of a 2 mil defender at this point and it would take double retention to get him there.

They absolutely should just keep him.

PS, value comes from cap not in how much a billionaire has to pay him.

There seems to be quite a bit of Subban hate out there ... makes me wonder if any of these people saw him play last year.
Its true that he is nowhere near the player he was, but once you accept him for the player he is today, you will see a highly competent, NHL level defenseman. That is far more than you can say for many other blueliners is this league.
On a third pair, he will be a tremendous asset.

Irrelevant for NJ. This is about winning games not trade value. Paying a third pair defenseman $2 mil for his level of play is highly valuable.

irrelevant to nj but relevant to any team that would trade for him,

cap is more important than actual money for a team that would trade for him

True, but the post was about why they shouldn't trade him.
