Description
I believe it is @drmantalban whom deserves credit for the idea of retaining salary on a shorter contract when trading Kaprizov to get the highest return…. If not, please identify yourself - I want the credit to go where it belongs.

And please remember, it’s just a question…

MIN
  1. Byfield, Quinton
Additional Details:
Would LA give up this big of a piece of their future to have 3 years of Kaprizov at $4.5million per…in order to make one more run at the Cup with the Kopitar/Doughty/Brown/Quick core???
LAK
  1. Kaprizov, Kirill
Additional Details:
For some reason it will not allow me to retain salary but assume $4,500,000 of Kaprizov’s $9,000,000 salary will be retained by the Wild.

I think for this roster you have 4 FWDs that don't belong in the NHL next season. Boldy is the only one of the kids that looks ready for the NHL. The center position is still the same meh as it was last season. So if you trade Kaprizov, you might as well trade Fiala and Dumba too.

Boldy/JEE/Zucc (I really don't want to throw Boldy to the wolves, but it'll be a learning year for him)
Foligno/Sturm/Greenway
???/Rask/Hartman
???/Gaudreau/Bjugstad

Brodin/Goligoski
Kulikov/Spurgeon
Benn/Addison
Fill in the ??? with AHL vets, waiver claims, cap dumps, or whatever NHLers are gotten from Dumba, Fiala, and Kaprizov trades. Keep Byfield and Rossi in the AHL so their contracts slide another year.

Wow interesting stuff

Yeah I think LA might do that and I honestly think it's fairly reasonable as Byfield really likely has more of an Evgeny Kuznetsov level future in my mind

Whereas the sky is the limit for Kappy

How about Byfield and Faber for Kaprizov?

What a brilliant idea! I'll have to think this one over, especially because I think some financial adjustment(s) would have to be made because I don't think that the math works for either team. We don't have the cap space and I don't think that you can retain that much with the Parise/Suter hits coming up next year and the season after.

The Wild actually could…since they currently have $9ish million budgeted for Kaprizov over that period of time. Clearly they will be reliant on ELCs and old guys on minimum contracts, but it can be done…

You’re the best!

So Byfield is untouchable for Eichel but a go for Kaprizov?

This trade is horrible for LA. I'm so tired of hearing about Kaprizov. Let him just go back to the K already.

Sorry, you lost me at the last two sentences. You can see a ceiling for a 19 year old, but think a 26 year old is going to continue improving? That is, in general, not how development works.

The whole point of the Kings rebuild is to build around the 6'4 elite prospect. Not trade him away for a winger, as good as that guy may be. Turcotte and Vilardi could be on the table, but if Byfield won't be traded for a true franchise changer (if healthy, granted) in Eichel, he won't be traded for a winger.

I’m definitely an advocate for the short term retain salary strategy for Kaprizov trades. I think it’s the best option to maximize value, and the dead salary doesn’t matter because trading Kap would be a rebuild kickstarter.

This is exactly the case in point. If you don’t have retention, a team like LA is never even in the conversation to trade for him. 3-4 years of Kap with 50% retained creates a much bigger market. Despite what posters here may say, the Wild would get a nice haul for Kap at that rate.
