Decline. We don't need anymore underachieving wingers, Beecher is not a top prospect and the 1st is going to be late-round. Easy no.

If Hertle does indeed want out because of Kane and won't resign what do think is his market value as a trade deadline rental?

If Hertl is traded, better offers will be out there. Boston will not give up Lysell so why would we give them our best player in his prime? Silly to me.

The closest comp I can think of is Mark Stone. Now Stone is a more complete player than Hertl, but centers are a premium in the NHL so we'll call it even (still slight edge to Stone IMO though). in 2019 Stone was traded for:

Oscar Lindberg - 27yr old career 4th liner
Erik Brannstrom - 15OA pick in 2017 NHL Draft - Smaller LD that projected at worst as a top 4 d-man
2020 2nd round pick (DAL) - ended up being the 2nd to last pick in the round

IMO, a better comp would be the 2nd Matt Duchene trade between Ottawa and Columbus.

Unlike Stone, both Hertl and Duchene are very similar type of players, both play the same position, same cap hit and are/were pending UFAs.

What Ottawa got in the 2nd Matt Duchene trade was a 1st round pick, two middling prospects and a conditional 1st that never materialized.

I think something like that in a trade between Boston and San Jose over Tomas Hertl is more than fair for both sides.

Within the last week, I proposed a trade where San Jose is arguably getting a return on Hertl from Boston than Ottawa got on Duchene from Columbus.

I also used a rough template for what Kevin Kurz said was what the Sharks wanted for Hertl.

And of course, I took a lot of heat for it frown

Everyone agrees that was a garbage trade by the Sens. Sharks are not looking to get a minimal return for a 1C

People can think what they want, but GM's are going to use it as a comp (along with the Duchene deal like @sensonfire mentioned). If Hertl is traded at the deadline I think SJS fans are going to be disappointed with the actual return.

A) That trade was generally agreed upon as an underpay for Stone (look at the vote on the trade page on CF for confirmation)

B) You're basically saying that Lysell + 2022 2nd + like Lazar is fair in this instance? If there's a bidding war, I'm not sure why upping it to a 1st is all that big of a deal since it's presumably gonna be a late 1st anyway.

the similarity here is that vegas was the only team stone wanted to play for. hertl’s a UFA next year with a restrictive NTC, he can restrict trade to just three teams, and no one’s going to give up a big package for a player that won’t re-sign. if hertl really wants to leave SJ and won’t re-sign, i think the stone trade’s prob around what they can realistically get

A) LMAO ya because CF is a sane and rational place to evaluate things

B) Not what I was saying at all, I was just giving a comp I could think of to the person that asked.

i can't wait for the TDL when hertl finally makes it clear he will not be coming back to san jose and wants out and san jose ends up having to sell short and all these san jose fans look like idiots for declining these more then far offers. Would make me laugh even more if he signed with boston as a ufa and we got him for free without losing any assets

If DS had just used a smidgen of forward thinking this off season when he put Boston tight against the cap for the next 2 years with his UFA signings there would be a good chance of being able to be in on Hertl when he becomes a UFA instead of trading assets they can ill afford to get rid of to acquire him now. As it stands signing McAvoy and Bergeron if he still wants to play past this year AND signing Hertl as a UFA will be extremely difficult to do.
