Description
DESCRIPTION OF TIERS BELOW

THESE RANKINGS ARE SUBJECTIVE AND PLAYERS CEILINGS (NOT FLOORS)
T1 - Franchise Altering Prospect, no words needed
T2 - Elite Level, truly special, Number one guy
T3 - Star, almost special, top line player/ top pairing guy
T4 - Top End Talent, but not special, top 6f/ 4d material
T5 - Key Player but not top end, middle 6f/ 2nd pairing
T6 - Useful bottom 6f/ bottom 4d
T7 - Long shots, projects

To clarify, these example are not exact.
Hertl I used as T3 because he is a guy who can be your number one but would be better as a "number 2". Like if you need him to be your 1C he can be and he could even steal the 1C on his own. So he's ahead of Sean but thats not a slight.

Monahan isnt a bad player, I used him for T4 because I see Sean as a 2C not a 1C or 3C. Ellers is a great 3C who is ideally used in your middle 6 but hes very good as to why he is T5 (below Sean). Tierney is a great bottom 6 player who CAN be like Ellers, but is more suited for that bottom 6 player who can provide quality time if needed to be relied on more. T7 is guys like Nieto or Martin - NHL players but have not been able to secure full time jobs with term.

              KEY HIGHLIGHTS:

              Why is Ozzy so high?
              - Ozzy looked really really good for the Sharks. I mean these rankings are based on ceilings. Is it bold to say he'll be AS GOOD AS HERTL? Yes but I think he does so much well and you can see he learns on the fly and trys to adjust to his recommendations. He wants to shoot the puck more? You can see hes worked on it, his motor is still on fire and he's showing some IQ development that makes me believe more and more that he not only has a great base and tools but is developing some finesse to add to these plus his motor is irreplaceable. If he can get stronger, keep developing and working in SJ I see this kid being a top line complimentary piece. He is not gonna get 90 points but I could see him racking up 50 points consistently and throwing some big hit numbers and two way responsibilities (PK and PP2).

              Merkley...
              - Merkley looked really good. If you asked me if Merkley would make the NHL even just a week ago I woulda said no (and I did multiple times in the past months). But Merkley looked quite good and he's clearly not only put in the work but you can see he's learned a lot. He looks smarter, bigger, and more conscious of what he needs to do to become not just an NHL player but what he needs to do to flourish. He's never gonna be a Hedman type two way guy. But if he can keep cleaning up his game, stay steady and strong he could be like Hamilton. A valued OFD. He still isnt set for the NHL imo but he's proved me wrong this camp so lets see if that continues.

              Robins!
              - Robins is a ton of fun. I've slept on him but he looks like what a lot of fans praise, he does look like a kid who could become a real good NHL'er.

              Cardwell
              - I really liked watching Cardwell. He's not a star in the making like some of our other prospects but I did feel like he was noticeable and a guy to keep an eye on.

              Hatakka Kniazev
              - Santeri Hatakka looks like a guy WHO WILL make the NHL whereas Kniazev looks like a guy who COULD make the NHL. Where they differ is; Hatakka could be good, but Kniazev could be GREAT.

I have a feeling that there is some significant overrating of many prospects here

I think you are but generous with some of your ratings particularly Merkley but to each their own:
              For COL:
              T2: Byram and Newhook
              T3: Barron
              T4: Ranta, Olausson, Foudy
              T5: Kaut, Bowers, Helleson, Behrens

Well Merkley was very highly rated in his draft and was a comparable skill/ talent/ potential wise to Dahlin draft day. He’s fallen off but so has Dahlen. I think it’s fair to argue Merkley has that 50-70 point potential still just by watching his offensive abilities live. What held him back last year was size and defence. He’s clearly worked on both and learned some poise.

I would say the other big stretches are Ozzy which I point out and Gushchin but I really enjoy watching both them.

As for your ratings I would say again they’re all high ratings but fair when you put into context their own competition and ceilings. I think Newhook is quite good and we’ll see how this professional season goes for him. Byram im not a huge fan of but again; he’s is a very talented prospect. Also I really liked the Olausson pick for Colorado.

Merkley fell for a reason in his draft class and hasn’t cracked the NHL for similar reasons. Physical skills are there but the rest.

Why wouldn’t you like Byram? Played top 4 minutes with a cup contender before getting hurt at 19, and his defensive metrics were stellar. He can play in all situations, and play left and right there is a reason he went 4th overall.

On everybody but Newhook and Byram I have them a grade that I believe is their ceiling. I think on different teams Byram is #1 dman this year for half the teams in the league, and Newhook is a future #1C but with the Avs those ceilings are lower because of who is in front of them in Makar and MacKinnon 2 of the 10 best players in the world. But hey everybody has guys they like and don’t like.

Ummm yeah I don’t want to sound brunt but you’re very wrong on those Merkley reasons. That was years ago and has since be resolved and the reason why he’s actually fallen in the eyes of most people is because of his defensive struggles and size. He fell in his draft due to attitude reason and was on DND as a result. He has resolved those issues years ago and no inkling of it happening with the Cuda. Even with his last OHL season there was no issues.

And similar to last year, the only thing that will hold him back is defensive play and responsibilities, and size but that seems to have improved. If he wants to succeed in the NHL he can’t just be one dimensional and that’s what the Cuda/ teams have been working on with him. If he can atleast be competent consistently in the D zone he will find success because his Off. game is 100% there.

No nothing against Byram I’m just not a huge fan but he will be good. Newhook looked really good every time I saw him (including WJ) so I have high hopes for him. I’d hope Newhook gets 3C out of camp, because that would show he’s playing well but also it’ll be a real challenge/ test for him and an interesting one to watch throughout the year.

Merkley 100% fell for non hockey reasons, he was traded in junior at least in part because of maturity issues. 100% can change that, just find it odd that on a team needing young talent he hasn’t broken through already though they have a lot of money in older dmen clogging up things.

Newhook is probably going to get the shot at the 2LW out of camp and if he can handle it they will play him there. I would hope he could hand the 2C by the end of the year in an ideal world.
