You’re overvaluing Hughes and undervaluing smith plus this draft is stacked and that’s more than likely going to be a good pick

My guess is something like this to start…

Zacha - Hischier - Bratt
Tatar - Hughes - Sharangovich
Kuokkanen - Boqvist or Mercer - Clarke, Holtz or Boqvist
Wood - McLeod - Johnsson or Jankowski

Graves - Hamilton
Smith - Severson
Siegenthaler or Bahl - Subban

Blackwood
Bernier

IMO devils need to upgrade on forwards y’all have a lot of good mid 6 guys but you need those 1st liners to play with Hughes or hischier

Bratt, Sharangovich are top-6...hoping Holtz and maybe Mercer join then.
Zacha played that way last year.
But yes, could use on more elite winger before we get to the dance.

What is the value gap between Ty Smith and Quinn Hughes?
I'd think it would be a lot less that a solid middle-six rookie and a 2022 1st.

One measure looking at probability of becoming NHL star:

Pre-season:
Hughes 82
Smith 59

Post-season:
Hughes 92
Smith 77

Compared with Dahlin, Bouchard, Boqvist, Lundkvist, etc.
It appears that Hughes and Smith will be #2 and #3 d-men from that draft.

You know Canuck fans about just as bad a Sabres fan so I was trying to please both sides but I’ve somehow still failed

Hot take: Smith is going to be as valuable, or extremely close to as valuable as Hughes.

I think that is a pretty consensus take.

May find some vocal Canucks fans that say Quinn is miles better.
Or some fellow Devils fans that claim Smith will be better due to his defensive attributes.

But generally, I get the sense that people view them in similar tier, but with Hughes ahead.

I wouldnt rule out a more conservative approach with Zetterlund or Studenic getting that 4RW spot, as they have nothing left to prove in AHL. Gives Holtz & Mercer a year of seasoning in AHL ... Foote / Clarke, given the solid AHL seasons they had last year, seem like the guys who are more likely to be given the opportunity Game 1. Maybe one of the two get that 3RW spot with Kuokkanen & Boqvist, but I suspect it will be Johnsson. NJ Ownership / Fitzgerald seem content to let these kids progress at the right pace now, eg Smith (Hughes & Hischier being exceptions to that rule).
