Coulda Shoulda

Initial Creation Date: Sep. 21, 2021

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is what could have been and IMO they would have been better off going forward.
There is Cap space but will need it when Byron comes back in late December.
They are still weak at Center after Suz but perhaps Bergy does something like picking up Dvorak for Drouin and a 1st or something like that. Also maybe Brady doesn't sign for 8 mill either, there would have been many options!

How would we be any further ahead right now? Brady is likely sitting out the beginning of the season holding out for more money. He was supposedly offered 8 x 8 and still has not signed and his dad and brother are getting involved with the negotiations. For me this is worse than KK leaving via a ridiculous OS, Brady clearly puts himself before the team, 8 x 8 is an overpayment yet he still wants more money.

Whaaaat? For the life of me, I'll never understand folks that equate the amount that a player is being paid to whether a player is selfish. How are we going to sit here and say that Brady puts himself before the team, when the owner of that team has pinched pennies for the entire time he's owned the organization?

You do have a good point there! Nobody will argue Brady isn't bringing more to his team than KK right now but would you rather have Brady and a Kole Sherwood or Tyler Toffoli and Mike Hoffman for roughly the same cap hit? They aren't bringing the same skillset to the table, it's just to show how much money Brady's looking to get.

OP:
If we keep playing the "If" game then it's pretty sure that Toffoli isn't with us as Berge would've went to FA with a top 6 center as his mindset, not scoring wingers. That year was pretty bad with pretty much only Craig Smith and Granlund being middle six options so a trade would've been much more likely (Year prior was the Duchene year and he didn't want to join us so..).

8 Mil x 8 years is not penny pinching, he is offering more than what Brady should be getting. Brady should only be in the 6-7 mil range on that length coming off his ELC. To be holding out for more money after that kind of offer IS pretty damn selfish.

Brady getting 8m a year seems like an overpayment. Besides it from the rumours he has turned down 8m from the Sens. Like his brother (and other players) he is angling to be a UFA in four years after his ELC.

Assuming the Habs take Tkachuk at 3 in 2018, we would have been more likely to take Zadina at 4 than Kotkaniemi.

I was somewhat surprised Sens took Tkachuk at # 3. I kinda figured he wasn't long for Ottawa, though once he signs his first NHL contract, he is under control of the Sens for seven years.

The Sabres are not a good organization. When they selected Michigan Dman Owen Power as # 1 overall last summer, the most important criteria is whether he is going to sign as a Sabre. College graduates can become UFA....Fox, Marino, Vesey and others were drafted but did not sign with their clubs and waited a few years to graduate and thus become UFAs.

Just saying more and more RFAs or even unsigned draftees are wielding more power in their NHL destination, $$$ and term.
