Would have guessed a lower AAV for this short of a term, but I guess Buffalo doesn't exactly have an issue with cap space right now.

Calling it now, he signed this deal so he can get a one year qualifying at 7.2m and be a UFA in 4 years. Genius. He is seeing what is happening with eichel and is saying he11 to the naw

Wow, with the amount of money teams we’re paying defensemen, I’m surprised Dahlin’s deal was so low

Now only the Canucks boys and Tkachuk.

And no, both of the remaining RFA Islanders don't count because they aren't important.

This is a good deal if he reaches his potential... but it's Buffalo we're talking about.

Was such a hard deal to guess. He was in line for likely more for his first two seasons. A down but not bad year.

Decent contract. I think they likely overpaid a tad based on comparables, but they have the space, and I doubt it matters. If he pans out as he should, perhaps giving him more now will make the next contract a little better

I suspect they'll both just accept their QOs eventually (the NYI boys)

A young promising prospect actually accepting a bridge deal, IN WHAT WORLD ARE WE LIVING?!

I love this deal, because it means Hughes will likely not get $8 million or more from the Canucks. Hell, they might get Hughes for $7 million or less. ... Yes, I know that's a small chance, but there's a chance.

This deal is either to get him to UFA sooner or be easier to trade at a later time.

Could’ve been so much more, honestly sad what Buffalo has done with a talent like his.

Their deals are likely already signed but Lou is playing coy with his cap hit (not that this is likely to affect it appreciably) and only making contract announcements in bunches of 5.

100% agree. And in the meantime it’s good for both sides. If Buffalo decides to move him at some point they will get a good haul because of the Lowe AAV too

Little bit of overpayment here but Buffalo can afford it and sets QO for new deal 7.2 million

I love that 6 million which would be highest paid d on many teams is a bridge. Lol

I'm not arguing it's a bad deal just perspective can be funny.

If Hughes gets over 7 mil on a bridge thats awful negotiating by the nucks

It's not a bad contract for both sides considering with some polishing he'll be a stud two-way defender. Sadly bridge contracts aren't what they use to (Like 3-4x the ELC for 2-3 years), guys wanna get paid and are accepting slight underpayment but nothing cheap, see Brayden Point at 6.75x3 or McAvoy at 4.9x3, they were already established as top six/four NHLers at the end of their ELC but still took the bridge. Which makes me think once again to what would be a reasonable contract for KK as he hasn't proven anything close to what Brayden Point showed at this stage of his career.

It's actually the opposite. They have an issue with getting to the cap floor. This helps

They easily could take a garbage contract from someone for a third and everyone would be happy instead of overpaying someone.

Or you overpay a little for your best player when you can afford to and make him really happy. But yeah let's go hard after third round picks!
