Non existent cap crunch? They have 11 million in cap space and have to sign EP and QH. Both will command 9 mil per season. The going rate for these guys. Does 9+9=11 in Vancouver? Asking for a friend.

Hughes won’t command 9 million. Plus, they have over 16 million in space, not 11

They have around 16M. Hughes can be bridged for around 5M (McAvoy, Werenski, and Sergachev) all signed 3 year deals for around 5M or less recently. Which leaves 10M for EP on a long term deal.

VAN doesn't have a cap crunch YET. I keep hearing fans say that the Hughes contract is done, and they want to do both at once (which does make sense from an OS standpoint), but camps start this week, so time is of the essence.

I'm really wondering if both Hughes and EP are playing hardball for big money, knowing that they hold the keys to VAN's future success. If Hughes' cap is under 7 (and that's not guaranteed), then EP could get close to the top (VAN could make 11 work technically, but would probably want to stay in the 10.5 range. Anything over that and it will make short term injuries tough to deal with).

Don't look at past bridge contracts for comparisons, every situation is unique (or crazy). If VAN could get both of them to take bridges, this wouldn't be a topic of discussion. Something is holding up these deals (probably EP).

Hughes can’t OS.

Why wouldn’t you look at comparable comps like I mentioned earlier?

EP can offer sheet though.

Looking at comparables is fine, but at the end of the day, it's up to Hughes and his advisors if they want to take a bridge or not. If every team could get their top guys to take bridges, they'd do it, but that isn't the case. Some guys want to cash in immediately.

Hughes doesn’t have any leverage. He’s under team control, isn’t arbitration or over sheet eligible. Of course guys want to earn the most possible in their careers but you need some leverage.

Personally I’d be fine with Detroit doing a 2x 1st round OS on EP but OS are rare & Benning would match.
