Sorry I forgot to mention that this would happen at the deadline if Coyle doesn't fill the 2nd line center role well enough. That's why it's only a conditional 3rd for Hertl.

This is still horrible, also resigning conditions aren't allowed anymore.

Yes and Hertl probably would have more value than Hall did at the time but the point is that rental players aren't going to get you a huge return (unless you're trading Foligno to the Leafs). I remember that last year everyone was saying Hall would get a 1st rounder in return at the deadline, but they ended up getting a low 2nd. The Flames weren't good last year in the worst divsion in hockey, and they didn't exactly improve during the offseason, so their pick could easily be high in the 3rd round. Furthermore, Kuhlman is still a young player who has plenty of potential and is probably worth an early 3rd himself, so it's basically 2 high 3rd rounders for about 25 games of Hertl. I don't see why that's a bad deal for the Sharks.

Comparing Hall last year to Hertl is laughable. Totally different players totally different situation.

Your extremely biased if you think 2 3rds is market rate for a 1C.

Khulman is a 4th line guy at best, pair that with a third and the sharks will give you a bag of pucks. Hall only wanted to go to Boston so Buffalo had zero leverage in that situation. Hertl has said he is willing to stay in San Jose but is also opened to being traded. Hertl is a center, a position which will be worth more than a winger to begin with, who has average more points over the last 3 seasons than Hall will be worth MUCH more. Offering an awful deal just so your team gets better isn’t realistic or going to happen, ever.

1st plus top 100 prospect if he doesn't agree to an extension (rental).

Nobody is trading a first round pick for a rental player. If they dont trade him, they'll lose him for nothing.

Don't know what league you watch, but 1st round picks get traded at the deadline for rentals every year...

Foligno, a player easily worse than Hertl got a 1st.
Savard, a player easily worse than Hertl got a 1st.
Palmeri got a 1st

And that's just from this past deadline.

Alright, I'll admit defeat. To be fair, I didn't know you couldn't trade conditional picks for if players resign anymore. However, the whole point really is the idea of trading for Hertl, not necessarily the amount my hypothetical trade is giving. If the Bruins did want Hertl, they could easily add more.
