Description
Is this the team come game 1? I like what I've heard about Mercer, but I only want him to make the team if he's ready to be a 3C. If they want him on the wing, I'd say let him develop in the AHL for a year. What do you guys think?

I really hope Ruff's comments about Zacha at Center were just a head fake. Ok, if Nico or Hughes get injured, sure, he's an option .... but please for all that's holy, put him back at where he finally started to see some consistent success.

So if we have Zacha at wing, who do you want to see play 3C? I have this

Hughes or Hischier 1C
Hughes or Hischier 2C
Boqvist 3C?
Mcleod 4C

I think it is looking like:

1C/2C Jack and Nico
3C Mercer
4C McLeod

Mercer is playing his way into 3C role.
But I agree that I would rather see him start at 1C in AHL than 3RW or 4RW in NHL.

The counter-argument to this is that he has the ability to play the style of hockey that Wood/McLeod play.
At least more so than Boqvist or Studenic.

What's wrong with Mcleod at 3C? I think he'll morph into a Zajac role, PK/ Defensive guy. Great Center to have behind Hischier and Hughes. Now that the Devils actually have some depth on the wings maybe Mcleod points will go up getting some time with Tatar, Sharan, Kuokk, etc.

Boqvist doesn't fit in the bottom 6 for me, doesn't win faceoffs, hit, or kill penalties. Boqvist is still waivers exempt I say start him the AHL.

He is too one dimensional, all speed no smarts (on an NHL level anyway). He doesn't have the shot, vision or the quick hands to score consistently and I see very little resembling Zajac in him.
McLeod's game meshes very well in a line that doesn't look to keep possession that much but is effective looking for quick transitions, odd man rushes, dump n chase where he, Wood and the other 4th liner can make use of their physicality. He may turn into a real defensive asset but mind you, he was a contributor to the worst PK in the league last season.

I think he'll do nicely in his NHL career as a 4C, I don't expect anything more than that.

My counter to your counter would be Holtz needing more time to develop, I think Mercer makes the cut but if he doesn't more time in the minors cant hurt for development especially if Vesey keeps up his pace.

Also I think the expectation for Holtz is a top 6 scoring F... if he ends up like McCleod/ Wood its not necessarily bad you just have to have a scorer on a team with the amount of playmakers we have

I think the overly simple conclusion is Mercer, if management thinks he's ready or Boqvist, if not. Reevaluate Mid Season if Mercer carves the AHL up and/or Boqvist fails miserably.

I'd prefer Holtz gets top 6 exposure in AHL where he can build confidence for at least half a year ... put Zetterlund on that 4th line. He's a big strong guy who takes the body, much like Bastian did.

Fair enough. What if our lines look something like:

Kuokkenen-Hughes-Sharangovich
Tatar-Hischier-Bratt
Boqvist-Zacha-Johnsson
Wood-Mcleod-Thompson

Are we ok with this?

I'm just a fan, so my opinion is unprofessional & limited, but Id hope and suggest something a bit different:

Keep this line together, due to past (limited) success;
Zacha - Hischier - Bratt
=========================
Replace a more limited, but valuable, linemate with a proven pro acquisition who can produce at a higher level next to Hughes:
Tatar - Hughes - Sharangovich
=============================
Call it your fourth line, or whatever you wish ... its your dump, chase, hit, drive the net, take the body, wear down & soften up the opposition GK & defense line of:
Wood - McLeod - Zetterlund (Foote/Studenic?)
======================
Wild Card line: Mix of older guys buying time to allow the younger proposects to season themselves in the AHL, older proposects on last chance, proven keepers who are more suited to bottom 6 if they were on a better (playoff) team or surprise prospects they just couldn't send down because they just played their way on to the roster:
Kuokkanen - Boqvist (Mercer) - Johnsson (Clarke, Foote)
===========================
Random comments:
I dont see Thompson as anything more than fringe AHL / NHL at best. More likely he's a career Minor league guy. He doesn't belong here.

Kuokkanen is a solid player, but certainly not a top 6 guy on a playoff team. Putting him on top 6 wastes Hughes' next level talent.

Zacha has failed the eye test & (advanced) statistics at center. Understanding he's a high end physical talent, why not take away center ice responsibilities from PZ, (where he's failed) & free him up to showcase those physical skills as a wing?

Just my 2 cents, but Im just a fan.

Thanks for your post
