CAR
  1. Lafrenière, Alexis
Additional Details:
This is a hypothetical based on the conditional 1st round pick that Carolina got from Toronto as part of the Patrick Marleau trade.

Let's say Toronto won the 1st overall pick from the second phase of the Draft Lottery in 2020.

Alexis Lafreniere would have obviously been drafted by Toronto because he was the projected 1st overall pick by a wide, unanimous consensus and LW is a bit of a weak spot on the Leafs' roster
NYR
  1. Jarvis, Seth
Additional Details:
This would leave Carolina with the 25th overall pick in 2021 instead of the 13th overall pick in 2020.

That means Seth Jarvis would have been drafted by some other team.

CAR
  1. Ceulemans, Corson [Reserve List]
Additional Details:
If Toronto got the 1st overall pick in 2020, the 25th overall pick in 2021 would then belong to Carolina.

Based on the terms of the Patrick Marleau trade.

That means the Nick Foligno trade between Toronto and Columbus at the deadline would have needed to happen differently or not at all.
CBJ
The 1st round pick that Toronto sent to Columbus at the trade deadline (25th overall) is only two spots above the 1st round pick that Carolina sent to Nashville on draft day (27th overall), giving Carolina a good vantage point of what Columbus would do at 25.

IMO, Carolina would have drafted the same player as Columbus at 25th overall, Corson Ceulemans.

How did I reach this conclusion?

Well, the first two players that Carolina selected at the 2021 draft are both right-handed RDs, Scott Morrow and Aleksi Heimosalmi. With respect to the rankings of RDs at the 2021 draft, Brandt Clarke is far and away in the first tier all by himself. Then in the second tier, you've got Ceulemans all by himself. After that, there is a significant drop-off to the third tier of RDs comprising of Morrow and Heimosalmi. Carolina GM Don Waddell and Carolina's scouting staff would be well aware of this.

When the Canes saw that Ceulemans was off the board at 25th overall, they decided to trade the 27th overall to Nashville for two seconds immediately afterward. This behaviour suggests to me that they only wanted Ceulemans and if they didn't get him at 27, there was no longer an incentive to hang on to the pick when the next best RD would be available in the second round.

After securing Ceulemans at 25th overall, Carolina would still make the same trade with Nashville involving the 27th overall pick and the 2021 draft would proceed as normal.

In the end, Carolina would be left with Corson Ceulemans instead of Seth Jarvis from the Patrick Marleau trade with Toronto.

Yeah, I would still rather have Jarvis.

      huh ?

      What do you not understand?

If you asked an actual question instead of just blurting out "huh?" and then leaving it at that, I would be able to help clarify things for you.

      Makes sense.

In general, having Lafreniere with Matthews and Marner or Tavares and Nylander would have been fun. Would have also helped him probs win the Calder.

Would also open more questions like would Dubas have traded Kapenan for a RD instead rather than Pittsburgh's 1st or would he take that first and trade it for someone. Just so many questions based on this one scenario lul.

The Leafs 2020 1st to Carolina was a protected pick. If they had won the lottery, Laf would have been a Leaf and not a Cane,
