8 year deals for both kids if Hamonic is antivax

Created by: alwaysnextyear
Team: 2021-22 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 26, 2021
Published: Sep. 26, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is purely hypothetical; nobody yet knows why Hamonic is away from the team. BUT… if it’s because he refuses to get vaxxed the team should be able to either terminate his contract or at least put him on LTIR.

This would free up just enough space (maybe) to get 8 year deals done for Petey and Hughes, with Schenn stepping in to take Hamonic’s spot.

You cannot terminate someone's deal for their medical choices. They are legally allowed to determine what happens to their body. This is very similar to the Eichel situation in that sense. Eichel does not HAVE To undergo the surgery the Sabres want, just as Hamonic would not HAVE to get vaxxed. He has that option, it's his human right.

No, a team cannot terminate a contract or put someone who won't get vaxxed on LTIR.

It would be unlikely that contract termination would be allowed, but I think LTIR could be an option. Benning has said the team policy is that there will be a 100% team vaccination rate, so that would mean any player who chooses not to won’t be playing for a medical reason.

That would mean the team is choosing not to play him, not the player is choosing to miss games. As a player, he would still be eligible to play at any home game as lack of vaccination is only a problem when crossing the border. The team can have rules but that doesn't really matter in this case, its the rules the league and PA agreed to that make him eligible to play or not. To be LTIRable, he'd have to miss 10 games and 24 days. Not many teams having 3 week road trips of only US games.

Well regardless of whether LTIR would be an option, he wouldn’t be playing any games with the team, home or away.

Teams have the option to suspend unvaccinated players (without pay). Club suspensions do not negate cap hit.
Players have the option to opt out of the season prior to October 1st. In which case the team may choose to either remove the current year of the contract or toll it forward. While not specified, the wording suggests that contract does not apply to the team's cap for the current year.

So if it's the club's choice, cap hit still applies. If it's the player's choice, cap hit does not apply. Only vaccinated players missing time will be treated as hockey related injuries and eligible for IR.

That's not 100% true. For example, Max Domi might have the choice to play without being vaccinated due to underlying health issues (Domi is diabetic; I have no idea if Domi is right, but the point stands). Players that do not get vaccinated for health and religious reasons are still eligible to play in the season and cannot be suspended. If Hamonic has an underlying condition and does not want to opt-out, he cannot be suspended is my point here.

Sounds like Benning has left the ball in Hamonic's court. Quote from Canucks' beat writer Carol Schram;

"The opt-out deadline for the season is this Friday, October 1.
And while Benning is trying to be patient, Hamonic's situation does have trickle-down effects. If he opts out or retires, his $3 million in salary-cap space would open up. A replacement would have to be added onto the roster, of course — at a minimum of $750,000."
