These are the NHL rules on Timo Meier's Qualifying Offer in 2023 per the Collective Bargaining Agreement:

    1. The Sharks must extend a 10 million dollar qualifying offer in 2023 to Timo Meier to retain negotiation rights with him.

    2. The Sharks have until the later of June 25th, 2023 or the first Monday after the 2023 Entry Draft to submit the 10 million dollar QO for Timo Meier.

    3. If Timo Meier does not receive the 10 million dollar QO, he becomes a UFA.

Not the Wild. We don't have the money and we don't need to give any to another winger.

I'd be willing to bet the Sharks will offer him term on a contract and the QO won't be an issue.

The rules state a QO must be given to start negotiating with an RFA like Timo.

if a long term contract is agreed upon then the qo does not matter

I know, but that doesn't mean he's going to accept it without talking to them about other options first. If they offer him a 6 year deal, at something around 7M, he may be inclined to take that 42M over 6 years instead of the 10M over 1 year. I'm not saying those are the exact numbers, but a lot of times guys will trade a little bit of money for a lot of security.

But in that case, the question then becomes "Would Timo Meier reject anything but a 10 million dollar QO before the 2023 offseason?"

A long term contract would have to be agreed upon before the 2023 offseason takes place, no?

            I mean just to be on the opposite side;

The Sharks DONT HAVE too let him walk into UFA because he can just as easily have a deal struck without the qualifying offer, or even be qualified and than immediately have a new contract in the works. Too assume the worst case will happen goes both ways, it’s not like the Sharks MUST give him 10m x 1 year because it’s likely no one offers him anything close to 10 so why would he walk.

Too early to tell because there’s still 2 seasons yet to happen (which both will drastically impact your hypothetical, so it’s way to early)

If I'm Timo Meier, this is what I'm thinking.

            1. That 10 million dollar QO is so delicious that I'm salivating right now.

            2. I want to play for a Cup Contender and the Sharks are no longer one as of today.

            3. The Sharks are going to tank again and I don't want to be apart of a rebuild that needs to happen, but hasn't yet.

            4. If I force the Sharks to decide on whether to give me my QO, I either get the QO or I get to go play for whichever NHL team I want.

Cant see the Devs pulling the trigger especially if Holtz/Mercer/ any F prospect pan out... I know we've been tied to him but cant see it happening.

why not? Devils have plenty of cap space, need wingers, and Timo's already shown he has chemistry with Nico

Yea, once the free agency period begins. But you can sign him earlier. He also can be offered a QO and sign a different contract, but that would be risky for the team

He could sign with SJ today if they found a contract

Because I would rather have Holtz/Mercer perform at a high level for cheap then spend money right now... you're not wrong in that they have chemistry but if the cap isnt going up anytime soon we should continue to draft and stockpile assets.

Mercer looks legit and just what we need right now! Hoping Holtz can make the team and stay in the show.

Potentially the islanders. Theyll have some cap space to potentially sign him and do need wingers.

Unless GM Doug Wilson can come up with something better, I'd want nothing but my 10 million dollar QO in 2023 if I'm Timo Meier.

In that case, Timo Meier will be a UFA in 2023.

Unless Doug Wilson can come up with something better and more enriching for Timo before June of 2023, which I very much doubt.

I don't see him going to any of the 4 options you said
Senators - Owner is too cheap to spend big money on free agents
Devils - Already have a ton of wingers such as Holtz, Mercer, Sharangovich, Bratt, Zacha, Foote and more
Wild - Can't afford him with the buyouts
Predators - Would be in the mix of their rebuild

A team I can see is the Kings
Meier is in California right now and I'm sure he loves the weather and environment. He could be a top winger in another California team that needs wingers

why not? Devils have plenty of cap space, need wingers, and Timo's already shown he has chemistry with Nico

            My thought exactly.
            Obviously depends on $/term

No team is offering him a $10m QO.

One of two things will happen:
            1. He gets non-tendered and becomes UFA after 2 seasons (Summer of 2023)
            2. Whoever owns his rights extends him to new contract before current one expires.

Meier has the leverage with #2, so his highest trade value may be to team looking for 2-year rental.
So #1 seems more like for both SJS and acquiring team.
