Chicago declines easily, Morgan is a rental and Hawks need shut down D men which both McCabe and Murphy are.

If Toronto really wants to swap Marner for Wilson, here is a trade that looks fair to a Caps fan and keeps the Caps under the cap with 21 players:

Marner, Mitchell
Amirov, Rodion
Dermott, Travis

TOR
Wilson, Tom
Jensen, Nick
Eller, Lars
Kempný, Michal

I'm looking at it as Jensen for Dermott, Amirov for Eller, and Marner for Wilson. Should probably add a 4th for dumping a year of Kempny, except that he might still be a top four D, so maybe make it conditional if he doesn't play 20 games.

this is laughable, there is one good player and 3 overpaid veterans in return for a superstar, a great prospect and an average 6th d

Eller's been on a 42 point pace or better the last two seasons, at 3.5M. Scored a Cup-winning goal. Plays top PK until with Jensen, and they finished top ten in PK%. The Leafs need both those guys to fix a weakness. Jensen is on a good contract. Eller is on a team-friendly deal that raises his trade value.

When Kempny played top pair he finished top 30 in +/- and in EVP among defensemen. He assisted on Eller's Cup-clinching goal. He just missed a year. The word is he's healthy, but if not, Toronto gets LTIR cap space to make a deadline trade.

If you don't know who Tom Wilson is, and you don't think the Leafs need him more than Marner, why even post this? Marner is worth Wilson, or Marner is worth McMichael. Kerfoot is not worth either of them, and the Caps aren't giving away any cap space. They might give away Kempny to get the cap to balance. They might give a 4D for a 6D to get the cap to balance. They might give a great 3C/poor 2C for a pretty good prospect whom no Toronto fans have ever mentioned except in a trade, in order to make the cap balance. Toronto wins all of the little parts of the deal I offered. If you don't think they also win Wilson for Marner, then WSH seems pretty happy keeping Wilson.

There are some years when Marner gets a bunch more points than Wilson, even at even strength. There are some years when he doesn't. Wilson hits more than almost anyone, year to year, and doesn't back down from fighting anyone in the NHL to defend his teammates. He plays a very different style from Marner, and different people think different styles are worth more or less. But I'm not posting this to start a back and forth. I'm trying to help you not look ridiculous.

Caps say no thanks, how could they afford Marner and Kerfoot? And Wilson is just too valuable to them, especially at half the cap hit of Marner.
