My lineups part 15

Description
Minnesota had arguably the worst offseason out of all 32 teams this year. The double buyout was a mistake which I think is going to cost them at least for the next few years to come. They could have maybe slipped by with just Ryan Suter, but now both guys will take up 14.7M of dead cap by 2024. The other questionable move they made was signing Kirill Kaprizov to a 9M dollar contract after only one season which is way too much. I wouldn’t even sign a guy like Wayne Gretzky to that much after one season. Sure it’s great they were able to sign him, but he needs a little more time to prove he can stay that good at an NHL level. The Wild might be okay for this year, but their future is looking pretty dark to me.

I don't think Boldy on the 4th line is a good idea, and as @leafsfan16 said, rossi could make it too.

Kaprizov - JEE - Zuccarello
Greenway - Rossi - Fiala
Rask - Boldy - Foligno
Sturm - Gaudreau - Bjugstad

I'm always amazed at how many people think Boldy is a center.

They don't do enough research and still want to state their opinion. So when they see him listed as a center on here, that's what he must be!

Besides Boldy not being a center, Rossi making the team is actually really bad for their future cap crunch. Because he signed his ELC as an 18 year old, he's slide eligible this year and his ELC would then end after Parise and Suter's cap penalty becomes minimal.

I'm still curious as to why the buyouts were such a bad idea.

Suter needs to be carried defensively and Parise lost his scoring touch last year. Both are still good players in their own right, but at their caphits were a liability. This made it easier to replace them. You get some similar guys for shorter term than Parise/Suter and ease in the young guys.

Trading them was a great way to screw the franchise over. Not only were they likey gonna cost a fortune to move, but cap-recapture (which only went away as a possibility by buying them out) could have killed the team. And I believe it was a fair possibility that if traded, Suter specifically, may have retired early, costing the team a massive recapture penalty.

There was never a pretty way to go about handling their contracts and this was far from the worst way to do it.

I can’t see him being in the lineup at the start of the season. He didn’t play at all last year due to his covid situation and he needs some time in the minors.

The only thing with Rossi that gives me pause on that ELC thing is that he already slid once due to Covid and the pandemic, his first 'official' year of his contract isn't at age 18/19 but 19/20 instead. Given it's his age 20 season, I don't think that contract slides again, even if he plays in the AHL this year.

But I haven't seen anything that says either is the case or which is correct. I just know from everyone in the media talking about Rossi, they talk about him as if his contract doesn’t slide again. Which makes me wonder, and begs the question. Which is correct?

As far as the cap crunch goes... you bridge him past the buyouts. That's all you can do. Assure him that once the money's freed up post buyouts that he'll get his big contract and salary.

Him having COVID and missing a year shouldn't impact his contract; it was just a year he didn't play in the NHL. He still received his bonus for last year despite his contact sliding and since he signed his ELC when he was 18, that's what makes him eligible for it to slide a 2nd time. To be fair, I haven't seen anyone report anything on his contract one way or the other so I may be missing something. Have you seen anyone mention that outside of this site?

If he does make the team this year, they'll obviously have to bridge him in 24/25. It just gets a lot easier to ice a competitive team then if you have a (hopefully by then) top 6 center making $900k. A bridge would still be at least $4-5m for a year I'd think if they promise him a big money deal in 25/26.

Maybe it would be *nice* to have Rossi on his ELC til the end of the dead cap, but it is FAR from necessary, if it's even possible. Zuccarello will be gone by then, Fiala and Dumba might be gone by then. We're going to have a lot of flexibility between now and then to make sure we have the money to keep Rossi and Boldy. It's such a minor concern at this point. We can bring it up again in two years if it's still looking like a concern.

I've yet to hear anyone who complains about them actually come up with a realistic way Guerin could have done things better. Personally I always felt the only way things were going to work out for the team is if both ended up on LTIR but it's not as simple as that if the players both can still play and want to. At least now they don't have to guess about possible scenarios and can just plan around a fixed number (even if that number sucks).

It's just more people who don't know the situation but want to have an opinion. Same with the Kaprizov situation.

Rossi's contract is slide eligible this season. Since he signed last year, his slide eligibility is simply based on his age as of September 15th of this year which was 19. Had he signed this summer, he would not have been slide eligible.

I think the thing tripping you up is his early birthday. This is considered his age 19 season, not age 20. UFA eligibility is based on the player's age as of June 30th and draft/ELC slide eligibility is based on the player's age as of September 15th. The player's age at any other point in the calendar is completely irrelevant.

Here's the relevant quote from the CBA FAQ:

"If a player who is signed to an entry-level contract and is 18 or 19 years of age (as of September 15 of the signing year), does not play in a minimum of 10 NHL games (including both regular season and playoffs; AHL games do not count), their contract is considered to ‘slide’, or extend, by one year. [...] An exception to this rule is that if the player is 19 on September 15 of the first year of their contract, and turns 20 between September 16 and December 31, their contract does not slide. Players who sign at 18 years old are eligible to have their contracted extended for 2 seasons. This extension does not apply if the player turns 20 between September 16 and December 31 in his signing year."
