Ranking takes into consideration the ability of the whole team to generate offense, not just the forward group. Offensive dmen and powerplay are factors.

AlsoI tend to rank higher well balance offense than only one good line.

Too high for the Leafs offense. In a division that lacked any sort of defense outside of the Leafs, they still only managed 6th in goals for last season.

Oilers have to be number one. Most productive forward group lead by mcdavid and Leon. Barrie lead all d in points in his first season with the team expect to build off that along with Bouchard coming in. Could even point out who else has a goalie who will make 50 foot passes 4-5 times a game.

Oilers just can't score when McDavid or Leon aren't on the ice...

They were 7th in GF last year and 8th on this list. I'd say they're improved adding Hyman and Foegele, I don't think I'd call them #1 but would probably put them around 4-5.

Oilers have no depth outside of McDavid, Draisaitl, and Nuge. If one of the three gets injured, Oilers are in trouble

Sure they were 7th overall last year, but they did score like 75% of their goals with either Connor or Leon on the ice.

I really don't understand some of these rankings. Like, the Penguins scored the 2nd most goals in the NHL last season and are 20th, meanwhile the Devils don't have a single player who has ever scored 65+ points in a season and they're in the top half of the leauge??

Are you talking about offense, or forwards? Because if it’s offense, it is inconceivable that the Oilers aren’t #1.

That was last year, and McDavid and Draisaitl are on the ice probably 60% of the game.

In any case, team results last year show that the Oilers were in fact 7th in the league in scoring last year and they've made improvements throughout their lineup. Yet somehow you have last year's 14th and 15th ranked teams ahead of them...

Crosby and Malkin are both injured.
Devils now have Smith and Hamilton to set the offense from their zone, the kids have taken more experience they'll be better.

Well not every xG model is the same. moneypuck has them as the best xGF team https://moneypuck.com/teams.htm and naturalstattrick has them 4th. I think its pretty reasonable to have them ranked 2nd

Not when you consider the ixG of the players that they lost over the summer: NST

I dont think that will have as big of an effect as you think. Hyman was really the only significant loss but they added Kase, Ritchie, and Bunting which makes up for it imo. Plus I think its reasonable for whichever LW gets the spot on a line with Matthews and Marner to have improved production anyway

We'll see, there's no point in arguing about it as there's no way of knowing one way or the other. But, I would be remiss if I didn't point out that Hyman had a greater effect than most think - Matthews' scoring drops significantly when away from Hyman. Over the past 2 seasons at 5v5:

Matthews with Hyman: 1.88 G/60 and 3.11 P/60
Matthews w/o Hyman: 1.63 G/60 and 2.38 P/60

Matthews with Hyman: 62.82GF% and 58.94 xGF% with 53.83 O-zone start%
Matthews w/o Hyman: 60.71 GF% and 56.35 xGF% with 63.45 O-zone start%

AM's point production takes a significant hit when he doesn't have Hyman with him. His GF% and xGF% take smaller hits, but when you consider zone starts too it becomes noticeable. The effect is even more pronounced with Mitch Marner:

Marner with Hyman: 1.03 G/60 and 3.18 P/60
Marner w/o Hyman: 0.63 G/60 and 2.15 P/60

Marner with Hyman: 60.23 GF% and 56.85 xGF% with 49.42 O-zone start%
Marner w/o Hyman: 51.19 GF% and 55.97 xGF% with 60.77 O-zone start%

I'm not saying Hyman was driving this line (clearly he wasn't) but his play style really enhances the skill player's ability to do their thing. Perhaps one of these new guys can do just as well, but we don't know just yet. Toronto has lost more than just Hyman's goals from that line.
