Salary Cap Mode: Basic

Description

The ranking takes into consideration the ability of the whole team to defend well, not just the group of defenders. Good defensive forwards, PK and defensive systems are factors, offensive dman aren't considered here.

Also I tend to rank higher well balanced defense than teams having one decent dman but no depht.

By no means would I say the Oilers defense is in the top third of the league but I would call them closer to league average. They were 12th in GA last year. Larsson is a big loss but I don't think 28th is accurate. Comparing them to the neighbors down the highway Calgary somehow 14th on this list with a real suspect D after they lost Giordano and replaced with Zadorov. The less said about Gudbranson the better.

I'm taking Zadorov/Andersson/Valimaki/Gudbranson anytime before Keith/Ceci/Russell/Bouchard. Also CGY have Backlund and Richardson known as good defensive centers.

And you put the Bruins 14th??? Take a look at the Bruins rankings' in defensive stats over the past four seasons.

Im surprised the Avs are that low. They were by far the best team in terms of xGA last season and now swapped Graves for Murray and Timmins for EJ, plus have Byram healthy. Imo their D core got slightly better defensively if anything

I'll give you that Ceci is for sure a downgrade on Larsson. Bear swapping out for Bouchard is a lateral move. I'd consider Keith a slight upgrade on Jones. If you're taking forwards into consideration... Ryan, Foegele, and Hyman upgrade the 2 way play of the top 9.

I think you're really over rating Zadorov/Andersson/Gudbranson/Valimaki. They'll do alright against the California teams and possibly the Kraken but I think the lack of footspeed with Zadorov and Gudbranson will be a big issue with Vegas/Edmonton/Vancouver.

Avs are closer to top 5 then 11. They have one of the best Dmen in the entire world in Makar. their 1-5 are pretty hard to beat

The Ducks aren't the 5th best defensive team in the league. They belong in the 20-25 range.

Somehow I knew the Islanders would be #1 here - you seem to go by reputation rather than results.

Over the past 2 seasons, NYI were
12th in the league for shots against / GP
14th in the league for 5v5 shots against / 60
13th in the league for 5v5 xGA/60
17th in the league for HDCA/60

That's not the best defensive team in the league by a long shot.

Based on results MIN, BOS, COL, DAL are the best defensive teams in the league, in no particular order.
