"The opt-out deadline for the season is this Friday, October 1.

And while Benning is trying to be patient, Hamonic's situation does have trickle-down effects. If he opts out or retires, his $3 million in salary-cap space would open up. A replacement would have to be added onto the roster, of course — at a minimum of $750,000."

I wonder if Vatanen would have been a fit. if he can void his contract in Switzerland that is. He's probably the best RD on the market left.

Schenn on the top pair is not an option.

True, he's not. But neither is Vatanen really. The Canucks are going to be trying to find the best pairing chemistry they can and then deploy them situationally. Other than saying Hughes is their #1 guy, they don't really have a top pairing.
