Thoughts after Preseason games 1 and 2

Description
I'm gonna write a little bit about each player that stood out to me, both good or bad.

Forwards:

Fabian Lysell: This kid has really impressed me throughout these two games. He looks like he belongs out there against tough competition with his blend of speed, skill, and energy. His motor is nonstop, and it seemed to be infectious for his line mates as both lines he was a part of had good games. If I had to guess, he'll probably play in 1 more preseason game before heading over to Vancouver for the WHL, where I'm guessing he'll light it up on a nightly basis. That assist last night was nasty.

Jack Studnicka: I feel bad for this kid. He looked like a BEAST out there last night, but I'm still finding it tough to give him a full-time role on the big club. The muscle gain that was being hyped up over the summer was noticeable from his first shift, he just looked more like an NHL player. It was also evident in his game, he was more assertive and wasn't rag dolled every time he got hit. If Coyle is out for the season opener (which he probably won't be since his non-contact jersey is already off) Stud should be the 2C

Jake Debrusk: Great game for him in what I'm hoping is a bounce back campaign for him. It was clear that Jake wanted to forget about last season asap, he was moving his feet really well and his shot looked way better than it was in years past. I'm hoping he's back to his old game, he could prove to be a crucial depth scorer this year.

Erik Haula: His poise and vision was clear throughout his game on Sunday. He looked great, and you can already tell that him and Debrusk have formed some quick chemistry at camp.

Trent Frederic: Here's the one forward I'll talk about in a negative light. Frederic looked awful out there last night. He wasn't moving at all, and he wasn't asserting himself physically whatsoever, which he needs to do if he a) wants to an effective player in the NHL and b) wants to be a full-time roster player. I expected more, and he'll need to bring more if he doesn't want to be pushed out of the lineup, as I've showed in the lines I put together.

Defense:

John Moore: Why won't this guy go away? One of the most forgettable players on the lineup has really caught my attention these past two games. His skating has been outstanding, and he's been pretty good in all three zones. If he could prove that he could be a decent third pair guy here, trading him won't be so difficult.

Brady Lyle: A very poised performance from him is exactly what I wanted to see from him. He made the plays he needed to, and was solid defensively without taking any unnecessary risks. His numbers won't jump out at you, but this kid is quietly competing for an NHL spot. Clifton better keep his game up, because Lyle is coming for his job.

Nick Wolff: I love Wolff, but please stop embarrassing him by playing him against NHL competition. He's big, hits hard, and has a strong shot, but he can't skate with the big boys. Maybe he becomes a depth guy at the NHL if he learns to skate faster, but that seems to be asking a lot out of this kid. Still, could be a fan favorite in the AHL (a la Chris Breen a few years back)

Goalies:

Jeremy Swayman: Solid performance out of him. Very textbook stuff from what we saw of him last year; highly aggressive, good angles, relies on his positioning to make 99% of his stops. Can't ask for much more.

Linus Ullmark: He looked way bigger than I remember him in Buffalo, but he also had a solid game last night. Cut down his angles extremely well, looked like the seasoned starter that he's being paid to be. Looking forward to seeing him as the #1 guy with a legit defense in front of him (sorry Buffalo fans).

Good analysis. I am interested to see how Forbort and McAvoy pair together in some future preseason games. Your roster size is 24. In this lineup, who would be the odd man out of the scratches? I would say send Wagner to the AHL.

Probably Wagner or try to move Moore. Frederic prob plays full time as well but I was disappointed last night s o I bumped him out

Nice blurb... I also thought Keyeser did a good job and could be relied upon before Rask comes back if needed!

I don’t think there is any way Studs makes the lineup. He’ll start the year on Providence.

Trent plays the 4LW and Foligno the 3RW.

This means we lose Kuhlman and Blidh to waivers potentially. AND, you’re one player over the max roster size so not sure who else is getting sent across the waiver wire on top of that.

Is Studs still exempt?

Good write up BTW.

My fav player so far has been Lauko. He should have a spot over Trent based on his play in game 1. Been a fan for a while and Trent looked like he’s still on his blah trend line.

Bruins are in a pickle. If DeBrusk returns to form, a Lauko is 3yrs away from cracking the lineup full-time. He has Bruin written all over him, but might fizzle out like the other good players that entered the system.

They could trade DeBrusk for a legit 2C, and that still doesn’t help Lauko make the team.

Does anyone else feel like Sweeney picked up 1 too many UFAs?

I’d drop Wagner, don’t care if we lose Blidh or Kuhlman, they’re expendable and carry little to no value on the trade market. I know Stud won’t make a full time role right away this year, but my idea was to make a lineup without Frederic in it cuz he sucked last night and Stud was incredible

1 too many? Make that a crooked number.
