What it is Looking Like as of Now

Created by: KMarner34
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 1, 2021
Published: Oct. 1, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1st line - It seems pretty obvious as they have been playing a lot in practice.
2nd line - Bunting seems to be playing his way into a top 6 roll, and he will likely be playing with Tavares and Nylander to start out the season.
3rd line - It is a sheltered scoring line that can be trusted in the defensive zone.
4th line - Shutdown line that can be played against the other team's best lines. It has some scoring depth, but we'll have to see how and when they are played.

The top four stay the same as last year. but Sandin and Liljegrin will be very sketchy so I wouldn't be surprised if one plays with Muzzin and the other with Holl.

This goalie tandem has a chance to be very good, but injuries can screw us.

The first PP is what they were using in practice, with Nylander and Matthews on the flanks, Rielly QB, JT in front and Marner bumper. The second unit is what could happen, with Kase and Kerfoot being flanks, Sandin QB, Bunting Bumper and Ritchie net front.

The PK has a chance to be very good if they play the right system. They should be more aggressive than passive and try to turn the play back up the ice for a scoring chance or two.

Gusev is a scratch because he could be good scoring depth if someone needs a break or is injured, but if he is not doing well he can go down or be traded. Ho-Sang has been very good so far so he can sub in when needed.

The taxi squad is people who could be called up mid-season.

Not having a 7th Dman on the team isn't wise, due to having short term illness/injuries Certainly Dermot is one, and depending on Mennell to be one now, even if he was on the team, is really questionable.

Yeah but I forgot to add that we can send down Sandin or Liljegrin but they can stay with the team and not have to report to the Marlies. I'm hoping that Dubas has a plan because they should not be risking injury or being too fatigued to play good. I definitely get what you're saying

Point is a player that has minor injury isn't eligible for LTIR. The replacement on the team, and here we are talking about Dman has to be on the team,. What a crappy way to treat your two top Dman prospects....that ain't happening. I don't know why Leaf fans are so adverse to moving out a forward, and keeping seven Dmen.

You can do what you want with it. The main point of the scratches was to show that you can have 2 players sub. I just chose the 2 players that I think can have the most upside/positive effect with the Leafs

This team obviously sees Kampf as a relatively important piece, as evident by giving him an A on his sweater last game, and why shouldn't they? He's a great player who has been attached to Kase. I doubt Spezza starts anywhere other than the fourth line, meaning a more likely bottom six is:

Kerfoot - Kampf - Kase
Mikheyev - Spezza - Simmonds

I personally think that bottom six is better than what you have here anyways, as it is more defensively responsible and better offensively. Spezza won't be played in a role where he has to eat a ton of minutes and be matched against other lines to shut them down, but other than that this looks spot on

Those were originally the lines I had, I just don't like the idea or putting Kerfoot in a complete shutdown roe when last year (in the playoffs) he proved that he could be put in a top 6 scoring role. I had him with JT, Mikheyev with Kampf and Bunting with Spezza. Bunting is just playing too good to not play him in the top 6 to start the year though

In that position, he is not in a pure shutdown role. I have been advocating for Kerfoot to be played in an offensive role since the start of the season, so I'm right there with you. The reason I like the Kerfoot - Kampf - Kase line is because you have two defensively sound guys in Kampf and Kerfoot (Kampf obviously being the primary defensive guy on this line), and then two offensively capable guys in Kerfoot and Kase. Kase is also not half bad defensively although he's not quite the same as Kerfoot and Kampf, and the same can be said about Kampf in terms of offense. Kampf battles in the corners and does a damn fine job in the offensive zone. I think people overlook how good this line would be offensively because it would be stellar defensively. Great line at both ends of the ice

Personally i really don't like the idea of Simmonds being on a shutdown line going against the other team's best.

I also really don't like the idea of getting rid of depth on D, and being one injury away from running rookie Dmen in the Top 4, and then having to play one of Biega, Dahlstrom, Mennell, etc. in the lineup.

Teams that want to contend don't leave themselves that thin on the blueline.

I don't think Sandin and Liljegren would be sketchy at all with how Rasmus plays like a 30 year old and lil looking fantastic in preseason albeit a tad raw

Once lil gets a full NHL spot as deserved he'll settle

Those two would be a fantastic 3rd pair

He nearly led an NHL team in scoring a year ago

4 corsi rel for his career (four!)

Idk stuff like that ^

😑

A week of preseason where yeah indeed he's been a bit underwhelming while he's wrongly on a PTO means absolutely nothing all told

He looks really anxious too

He's a sensitive guy who deserves stability

Spezza is a 4th liner and excels in that role. His hockey I.Q. and skill though depleted with age is still better then other teams 4th line and bottom d-pairing. Ritchie will be a big factor on the #1 pp because he's going to be in front of the net, something the leafs haven't had in a long time. So either Tavares or Nylander will be on the 2nd unit.
