Hamonic retires

Created by: NotJimBenning
Team: 2021-22 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 1, 2021
Published: Oct. 1, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Canucks need to be aggressive to replace Hamonic by the end of today. There have been rumours in the past that BC born Dante Fabbro could be an intriguing option, should Nashville be in a rebuild. He has not performed up to expectations in NSH, a move to his childhood team, the Canucks, could advance his career.

Now, Juolevi, Costmar and a 2nd round pick might not be enough for Nashville - but if I'm the Canucks, I throw everything I can at this deal rather than hope we strike gold on the waiver wire or by signing a UFA like Demers, or take on an aging player via trade such as Colin Miller, Josh Manson, etc. We need homegrown legends on this team, Fabbro would be a wild acquisiton.

If NSH isn't interested in trading Fabbro (which I don't see them doing this year, maybe next), Benning could be a cheap option for VAN to just give them an extra body on the blueline. 1 x $1m contract, so won't break the bank. Something like a 4th should be enough. A short-term solution. And if Hamonic returns, they have more defensive depth.

Has it been officially confirmed that he is indeed retiring?

You could probably get Miller cheap with retained salary. Probably no more than a 2nd

No, but he wont be traded. As per Elliotte Friedman, teams have a preference on trading for fully vaxxed players - as Hamonic's status is unknown - no teams are kicking the tires on a trade at this point in time. Rightfully so, it would be an immense liability to trade for a player only to have them unavailable for certain stretches of the season (a la Edmonton Oilers & Duncan Keith)

Of course, but I would not be interested in a player like Miller

Oh trust me, Nashville is my second favourite team (always had a soft spot for them). I know that Fabbro, albeit not the best relative to his expectations and draft position, is relatively untouchable for now. My point above was that I don't care what the Canucks need to include for Nashville to accept, whatever the cost is - get it done. If the price would be Juollevi, a first in 2023 and a second/third rounder, I would still do that over any other deals out there. His cap hit for the next two seasons as well as his RFA status make him miles ahead anyone else that the Canucks could acquire. This is a Luongo magnitude deal. Within a season in Van, he would be in our top 4. I love his game and truly think he could benefit from a change of scenery. If that costs us too much, so be it, he's worth every penny!
