This is a good team friendly contract! Yet, some will still try to find anything they can to pick it apart cause its JB..

That's exactly what a bridge deal is - a short term move. 15M is obviously jumping the gun. This is close enough to Barzal's deal that we can all be pleased. Hopefully we can keep him long next time.

Well.....yes. I thought that was implied. 15M is obviously an exaggeration, I'd say around 9-11M depending how the next few seasons go.

Feel I should hold of voting in the poll until we know what his QO will be at.

bim jenning did a smart

Pettersson's contract comes up when Myers and Pearson expire, and the cap is likely to go up.

We just simply don't have the cap now to give him the 9+M total he would have demanded for long term now, so if he's worth only a little bit more in a few years (and the year Myers and pearson expire), then that's a win in my books. Too early to tell, as is the case with all bridge deals. For what it is, this is a really good total for the length.

This is an amazing bridge deal. Even if Pettersson gets $12 million or more after this deal, it will still be a great deal, because that means he's played well enough over the next three years that the Canucks won this deal hands down.

That's a good point. We should be able to calculate the maximum it could be, based on the rules of the NHL, right?

I think this is a good contract not sure I'd call it team friendly.

Accepting that the marner contract blows (I say this as a Leafs fan), I'd compare him then to Aho, M Tkachuk, Rantanen, and Barzal. This seems fair.

Rules For QO changed in 2020 now its just the AAV of the contract. Does not matter if his last year is 10 mil still only needs to QO his AAV of 7.35

Rules have changed indeed :

Quote:
For players who are on expiring contracts that were signed after July 10, 2020:
The Qualifying Offer is limited to 120% of their previous contracts annual average (AAV)

https://www.capfriendly.com/qualifying-offer-calculator

His QO would be 8.82m

I found on the QO calculator here on Capfriendly that its 120% of the AAV of the contract if signed after 2020, so Petterson's QO should be 8.82 million by that logic.
Think I can go ahead and vote this as a good signing.

For guys like Petey bridge deals can go either way

In Vancouvers case I got a feeling they will regret bridging him and wish they had given him the 8 year term at a reasonable cap hit when they had the chance. Cap space being the main factor as Horvat, Hoglander, Miller, and Boeser will all need new deals and with the cap potentially staying flat will be an interesting 3 years for them.

Bridge deals often = more money later

Instead of signing 9.5 x 8 yrs, Petey after 3 years could make upwards of 12mill x 8yrs depending on how well he does.

Next year Motte and Sutter Contracts come off to get Boeser his new contract and hopefully find entry level contracts to fill the Void. Rathbone hopefully see's limited time this year so we can keep him on a cheap deal for a few more years.
Year after for Miller, Horvat, Hoglander you will have the Buyouts come off the books as well as Hamonic(if hes here at that point) giving you 5.4 mill to keep Horvat and Miller Hoglander. Miller will be 30 at the start of that year so he wont be getting any Crazy increases if any.
The Following year you have Myers, Pearson, and Dickinsons Contracts Expire. Gives you almost 12 mill to give Petterson his increase, Sign Podkolzin if he does what we hope and resign Dickinson if he plays well and sign Rathbone to his 1st big contract if he develops. I would look at having Rathbone learn to play on the right wing and be a better all round player than Meyers at this point and help fill out your top 4 defenders. And Jet Woo hopefully has cracked the bottom right D as a solid Defensive D man.

Overall I think we are fine for the upcoming rounds of contracts as long as we don't get another crazy year like we did with Defense this year.

Great signing for both sides. Canucks win if they can re-sign for a mid or long term deal when this expires.
