Come on NBA guys have refused to play because there were "bed bugs" in the room NHL guys play with broken ribs. Have a steel rod inserted in a broken fibula to try to come back faster

I hear more from hockey fans calling a guy soft or saying a player or whole team is dogging it - as I said the players are both called the toughest and get called out the most for lack of effort / softness by the fans - almost every hockey fan I've met thinks lack of talent can be overcome by effort, toughness, playing like a team, buying into the coaches system, doing the little things.

I met many NHLers and best of the best from my area for the last 3 decades, and NHLers are freaks/robots/cyborgs until the human body parts start breaking down. Sometimes mental, abuse, trouble. Toughman world but once you blink, many will pass you and take your job.

The dichotomy of hockey culture is really fascinating. I think a lot of the belief in the toughness, chivalry, and hardworking of hockey players stems from Don Cherry's influence. At least in Canada. Obviously there are a lot of guys who epitomize those qualities really well (ex: Fleury, Foligno bros, Barkov etc.). There are also guys who are the exact opposite (no need to name names, we all know the players). Until that kind of on and off ice behaviour is truly unacceptable in hockey, that will continue.

I was mostly a football fan until a couple years ago, I watched hockey mostly in the playoffs but it when I got a little more into it I was amazed at how team building was so different than football - and the fans almost all believe their team can make the playoffs if they just put out enough effort - Sabres really don't have a legit top six forward on the team as of now, their Goaltenders are subpar, they might have slightly more talent on defense but nothing to write home about - but fans and commentators talk like if they just play harder and smarter they'd win, they expect the Sabres to go .500, I don't mind the delusional optimism and I try to avoid being a Debbie downer but I know at some point this delusional optimism turns to depression and vile nastiness.

Fair. I guess hockey is a sport where effort really can make a sub-par team succeed, at least to some degree. It isn't a sport where one superstar can propel you to win the championship. I think its very similar to soccer in terms of effort and teamwork outweighing skill. Think about how Denmark did in the Euro. Sabres gonna be terrible this year, no denying that. Hope for us isn't for the next few seasons, just glad the Bills are incredibly good
