Leafs without Reilly in 2022-2023

Created by: Janasazi
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 5, 2021
Published: Oct. 5, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Darren Dreger claims that the cap hit for Reilly when he hits the UFA market could be north of 8 million dollars. This puts him outside of the Leafs' budget.

Personally, I don't think letting Reilly walk will be completely destructive to the Leafs assuming that Sandin and Liljegren develop enough.

If we don't keep morgan I would love a long terme deal for Sandin, something in the ball park of what Rasmus Andersson got, 6 years 4.5-5 Millions

Sandin is looking really good now and it would be good if we make that kind of deal happens. However, sometimes players take a bridge deal to bet on themselves hoping to get a higher payoff later (like the Pettersson, Barzal or Laine deals). From what I see of Sandin, I think he's that kind of person that would take a bridge deal hoping that he can get a longer term payout.

Totally agree with you! only thing is from a Leafs perspective, in 2-3 years the big 4 need to sign new contracts, which will see an increase in at least 3 of them. Sandin in three years is projected to be #1 defenseman in my opinion. Wonder if enough money will remain for him or what is happenning to Rielly right now will happen to Sandin in 3 years..

My thought it more : If morgan leaves, the next 2 years we have more cap space, so let's us it to maybe overpay a bit sandin but then we have 2 years of cheap deal for him, would think both sides win

That is true. In 2 years Matthews and Nylander expire and then a year after that Tavares and Marner expire. It's gonna be a colossal mess for whatever GM we have. The team will probably end up being a lot different from what we know now.

It would be a lot more advantageous if we got Sandin signed for a long term deal given the storm that's gonna come when the Big 4 deals expire.

If I had to guess what will happen with the Big 4:
- Matthews will be extended and Nylander will probably be traded
- Marner will be extended and Tavares will either be traded or accept a much smaller deal

Although that's a dangerous topic to bring up because it'll lead to a big debate.

Yup that's gonna be a tremendous job for who ever.

Robertson will also need a deal at the same year as Matthews and Nylander.

If on top of that Sandin needs a deal after his bridge, he is gonna ask for a big pay raise if he indeed becomes the #1 def of the Leafs.

Conclusion : I really hope that Sandin signs for 6+years LOL

Reilly is going to too pricey for the Leafs. Some team is going to overpay him due to his PP stats. I really can't see Campbell getting 4m X 4. If Ho Sang is capable...and you have him as 3rd line winger, he should considerable more from some team. But your roster looks very reasonable.
Amirov and Kral...think they will be Marlies next season. Maybe Brooks and another Dman in 22/23.

This seems like the direction we're headed in with Rielly essentially being our own rental for this season. Sandin would have to make significant strides this year to fill a top pairing role in 22/23. IMO, a guy like Giordano would be an ideal insurance policy but only possible if he accepts less money à la Spezza/Simmonds/Thornton. Also, might be best to find a cheaper back-up if it becomes clear that either Campbell or Mrazek can be that bona fide starter for us.
