Fair value for a guy who, by now, almost certainly won't make his appearance before the second half of this season.

Doubt the Flames would be in on him at this point. They'd basically be flushing the season and would need to convince Gaudreau to re-sign after doing it. There was a time for this but it has passed.

The issue with the deal from Calgary's standpoint is they won't have Eichel in their lineup for awhile, so if they give up Monahan now they're creating a hole in their lineup that will make it tough to compete until Eichel is healthy. Admittedly I'm not familiar with the direction Calgary is currently going so maybe they're fine with a step back this year and try again next year with a healthy Eichel, but if that's the case maybe they look at shedding some expiring contracts at the trade deadline.

Thats the issue with every team, especially if they are giving a 22 first in the deal. Later in the year still makes far more sense- you keep your players to compete during the season, and the sabres dont sell low.

Unless he can be had by giving away future pieces and not current core pieces...

Needs to be a 3 team deal, because i give the odds of Monahan waiving for Buffalo less then 1 percent. And at minimum Eichel will miss at least the first half of the season if not more.

I dont agree, if the can acquire him without moving anyone on the Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk line then they can definitely stay in the mix until Christmas break. Right now he would be returning atd the latest early January with an ADR

Probably true but 5hat part isn't really Calgary's problem here

It kind of is since I doubt he would waive his no trade clause unless he were going somewhere he wanted to. In fact that is entirely Calgary’s own problem.

I should clarify, It's not Calgary's problem for Flames fans on this website. Potential landing places for Monahan have been discussed countless times though, Boston and Ottawa seems to be more logical ones

Calgary has neither committed to going for it or blowing it up and starting over. They have to decide which direction they are going in before they decide what they are doing or not doing with Monahan. But yes, there are several teams that make a lot more sense for him than others.

Going for someone like Eichel would be "committing to going for it." If Monahan is being traded it will have to involve Eichel (or a different upgrade) coming back or they are blowing up.
