Meirer declining stats don't warrant that return. Besides it hurts the Leafs in a position of need centre.

As a Leafs fan I'd rather hertl. I'm not trading kerfoot unless I have another offensive player (ie not Kampf) who can play C coming back

I mean what are you truly giving up? Two roleplayers. A late first and a late second. Timo would bring a power forward element to your top 6 that has not been there since JVR. And he is not a rental. He is got another year on his current deal and I believe he is still a RFA after albeit with a huge qualifying offer.

I could definitely see hertl going to the leafs. He is a rental tho. So i think personally Meier would be a better fit longer term and it wouldn’t be that hard to get a bottom 6 center.

Love Hertl, but if the Oil are spending that many assets on one player at the TDL, it better be a goalie or Dman. They have enough good forwards.

I agree. But do think about this. Where are all roads gonna lead through? Vegas. Hertl has been there and done that. And his power forward element would be crazy next to Connor or in the line behind him. He could also headline a shutdown line….freeing up Leon and Connor to destroy worlds. And I would be apposed to throwing in simek.

Sure he'd look great, but the Oil already have power forwards in Leon, Pulju and Hyman in their top 6. It's just not a top priority like a shutdown top 4 D or a stable goalie if one of Smith or Koski is having trouble over the season, as they both have sometimes tended to have.

The leafs have a few bottom 6 c options.

There issue is none of their bottom 6 C's can appropriately sub into a top 6 c role if injury to Matthews or Tavares.

The leafs have decided to go with kampf as 3c which is fine if they go shutdown but he cannot be a top 6 c.

Kerfoot on the wing is that insurance that they need. See how he was needed last year and actually did well at 2c with Nylander in the playoffs.

Hertl would be a WAY better kerfoot likely playing on the wing when everyone is healthy but totally able to play top 6 c if any need

While Meier can offer a similar role to hertl when everyone is healthy and is advantageous as he's signed for longer, he can't do anything to back up the top 6 cs

of course Leaf fans would do this. A low first and second. A guy SJ does not need and AHL Engvall. for Meier retained for 2 yrs. dubas would do it but DW would hang up

Kerfoot certainly isn't a role player. Leafs need him. to secure their low NHL depth at centre. What are the Leafs getting, a guy who has regressing stats. Gee, you criticize 23 point Kerfoot last season. but Meirer had 31 points.

Meier actually played some center at juniors and has filled in a few times for SJ (never started a game there tho). Personally Nylander is there. Again you can get a cheap center depth that if you had multiple injuries you could at least be there. Wouldn’t nick be able to play center on a hunch tho?

Timo also played on a (I know bc I watched this team) a very poor team with a changing cast around him game to game. While kerfoot played on a really good leafs team.

We could flip Kerfoot for even more value at the off-season and Engvall is a placeholder

??? I don't understand that argument. Kerfoot played most of him minutes on the 3rd line with two hands of stone wingers. But while I grant you Meirer is the superior player, the trade leaves the Leafs dreadfully shallow at centre. Matthew and Tavares sure, but Kampf had one goal last season and no other NHLers if Kerfoot and Engvall is traded. For the criticism Engvall (which I don't understand) gee in his limited minutes playing some centre and left wing, and no PP time, he got seven goals ....Meirer had 12. It's not a fit at all for the Leafs.

He’s literally 24 and has already had a 30 goal season

Yep...so. Giving up a much needed centre and maybe another centre, for winger just isn't a good fit for the Leafs.
I'd be more concerned with his 12 goals last season, playing top line minutes. Heck Engvall got 7 goals. Yea I know it's not a great comparison but really how does Meirer really make the Leafs better....even if he the best player in the trade?

He didn’t play close to top line minutes last year and the team was awful.

Are you saying Meirer didn't play top 6 minutes, including lots of PP time? Cause if he wasn't worthy of that, on a non playoff team, the Leafs or no team is going to offer nearly that much for him.

We have Bob Boughner as a coach, so no Meier didn’t play top line minutes

So, this discussion stops here. Even a person that doesn't follow San Jose that closely knows 10 of his 31 points came on the PP. Sure looks like he was getting top 6 winger time. He certainly was getting time to get offensive numbers.
What don't you understand, a winger isn't a pressing need for the Leafs.

You think the Leafs have the cap space to tender that qualifying offer?

I am not aware of Ritchie (I assume that's who you mean by Nick) having center ability.

Nylander I think would be our best bet.

Given the league having a tdl we would have to acquire one in advanced of the playoffs as can't deal with an injury after. Nylander can play in a pinch but it seems the leafs font want him there.

So if we made the Meier trade you mention at minimum wed need Bonino coming back as well.

EDM is not giving that up for Hertl.

He wants to be a FA.

Everyone knows that at this point. EDM doesn't really have options of trading away assets away on rentals if they ever want to win a cup.
