Prospect swap

Created by: Richard88
Team: 2021-22 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 7, 2021
Published: Oct. 7, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
COL
  1. Frost, Morgan
Additional Details:
27th overall in 2017. One year left on his ELC and waiver exemption.

Injury prone and has just been sent down to the AHL again after apparently disappointing in preseason. Maybe he could break out playing on a team who value skating ability more than any other team.
PHI
  1. Kaut, Martin
Additional Details:
16th overall in 2018. Two years left of ELC and waiver exemption.

Has done well in the AHL but hasn't been able to break into the Avs team. Kaut plays a smart two-way game that Vigneault would like, though he doesn't have the offensive flash that Frost has.

That would be a bad trade for the Flyers. Frost still has the potential to be a 1st line forward and he’s pretty solid defensively. Kaut is more of a middle 6 winger

Flyers decline. Frosts upside is plenty higher than kauts while his floor is only slightly lower.

I laugh all the time when a 25 year old is in a trade and people scream "tHe uPsIde" and the guy has played over 100 games and only has 3 points. It's comical. Not saying it totally fits here but the guy above said "Frost has 1st line potential" Like, are we still in 2019???

I think you hit on the reason the Avs wouldn’t do it, an extra year of waiver exempt, I don’t think everybody realizes how valuable that is, because you know injuries are going to happen.

Yeah, the organization made a big deal of having Kaut's ELC slide an extra year in order to effectively extend his ELC. Having that 2nd year left is a big deal because it buys a lot of extra time. Kaut could be kept in the minors this entire season to marinate a bit longer and still have another year left of waiver exemption. That's valuable in a cap league.

Frost probably does still have more upside than Kaut though. After missing a year of hockey he's missed some key development time though, and the clock is ticking on him this season before being waiver fodder in a year.

Overall I think it's probably a reasonably fair deal, though more risk is on Colorado's side given the extra year and Frost's injury history. His skating might make him a more natural fit in Bednar's system than Kaut though, so in that sense it would make sense. Avs also lack a playmaker for the middle 6 so there would certainly be an opportunity there for him.

I don't mind this, but I feel that Frost could probably get more value back from somewhere else

Hmm i guess you must have missed what happened this year with a rookie phenom who was... 25yo. Im not saying frost will become anything but hes only 22yo. Saying he has no upside is ignorant.

He was born May 14th, reaching a bit there with “soon”. Let alone that fact players can still develop at 23+.

Mantha, Bertuzzi, Nyquist, and Tatar are some recent Detroit players that become NHL regulars around that same time. What specifically makes him only a bottom six upside?
