I hate Eugene Melnyk

Created by: Rooster
Team: 2021-22 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 7, 2021

Description
I have been a Sens fan for the almost 30 years they've been around. I have lived the ups and downs of the franchise including being at the Palladium/Corel Centre/Scotiabank Place, CTC for some glorious moments (Duchene's goal vs. Sabres, the many Turris OT goals) and some painful ones(Sundin's clapper from the blue line in the playoffs). Melnyk has ruined the fun of this once proud franchise. We know Brady will only sign a bridge, so let it be. Get him signed and hopefully someone offers Melnyk a boat load of cash to go away.

Am I the only one thinks the dollars on the bridge contract has absolutely nothing to do with Melnyk?

7m on a 3 year bridge for what he brings is likely a big overpay. Matthew got that same contract while also bringing intangibles (although not as many) but had significantly higher offensive numbers. Brady hasnt even sniffed the 77 points that Matthew put up coming out of his ELC, throw in the fact that we're in a flat cap now and you have an overpay.

Svechnikov was selected 2 spots before Brady in 2018. He's put up better numbers almost every single season, is likely significantly more skilled, brings intangibles (although, again, not as many) and signed for 8x7.75m. Is Brady worh paying almost the same dollars/year that Carolina paid Svech with 5 years less term? No.

Love Brady but his side is asking for numbers that don't make a ton of sense or really help push the team toward putting pen to paper. 3x7m is likely too much and 8x8.4m is likely a bit too much as well.

All that to say, the only real link between Melnyk and the contract talks was that stupid comment about attaching the captaincy to an 8 year deal. Money-wise I dont think he's factored in at all.

It was obvious that Brady and his brother don't want to sign long term deals. Actually it the way of many RFAs. So just live the fact that he is going to a Senator for four more years max.
7m X 3 is still steep when considering the vastly superior Pettersson signing for 7.3m X 3

The media in Ottawa is a bigger problem than the owner.

Eugene Melnyk has owned the Ottawa Senators since 2003.

Close to 20 years.

And we had some success as a team since then and some rough patches as well.

At point would you say he "turned to the dark side"?

These points are fair and well articulated

But meln*k is an omnipresent pall over the team

It's also that the Mtkachuk and svech contracts are huge bargains they're much closer to being some of the best wingers on earth than people think

Like *the* best

They're in the tier under Panarin Pastrnak etc.

Who both deserve 13M ^ so svech and mtkach ~10

Brady isn't far back likely in the next tier so ~7M

Is fine especially as he'll likely move into prime

This league always underplays young assets

That really has to end

My last post inspired me to do this lol

The best NHL wingers ranked by tiers:

Tier 1 MVP level ~13M$
Kucherov, Panarin, Stone, Pasta, Marchand, Ehlers

Kappy?

Tier 2 ALLSTAR level ~10M$
Marner, Hubie, MTkachuk, ESvech, Bjorkstrand, Guentz, Tatar, Rantanen, Nylander, Buchnevich, Ovechkin, PK88, etc.

If you're wondering why a player was ranked ~in your opinion~ too low or too high it's almost certainly because of Corsi and/or linemate impact

2013. No question. Letting Alfie walk to Detroit was the turning point. Google the Sens attendance from the mid 2000s to today. 2013 was the turning point. We were averaging close to 19,000 fans a night a decade ago. Now we’re generously averaging 12,000. From 2013 onwards it’s been one disaster after another. Firing Cyril Leeder, the Lebretton debacle, Karlsson, Stone, the Senators Foundation. It’s too much for a fan base. He needs to go away.

Some great points, but I believe Melnyk has very much factored in this. From his quote a few months ago that you don’t name a captain who’s on a bridge deal, to the Sens not moving off an 8 year deal. Quite frankly, since when does an owner pick the captain of a professional hockey team? That’s the job of the GM and coach. He is far too involved in these situations and he creates a toxic environment. And truthfully, I think he enjoys that.

Respectfully disagree. The owner is the biggest problem. When you have media types like Ian Mendes who is incredibly well loved, caring and credible, pointing to the owner, then you know it’s real.
