If you're gonna go into full on rebuild, I wouldn't bother trying to trade Johansen. If you're gonna retain half for the next for the next like 6 years, and trade away a good prospect and a third to do it, you're just hurting it. You don't necessarily need that much cap space immediately, and certainly not bad enough to force a trade through that is unlikely to happen anyway. Just wait until someone offers you a trade, like the OEL trade.

The time to get massive rental returns has passed. TDL gonna be disappointing for sellers.

The time to get massive returns for rentals is the trade deadline - they have one every year.

I would like to agree but this doesnt really make sense. Teams overpay at the deadline all the time, why is this year different?

Look at the last few months: TDL rental deals were reasonable while summer deals were insane. The biggest TDL rentals were Foligno, Savard, and Palmieri

(Looks through CapFriendly's convenient trade history)

Might disagree based on actual history. NSH couldn't even unload $6M man Ellis at TDL and the return they later received was lukewarm.

All three of those guys got a 1st+ and Forsberg is significantly better than all of them

One outlier is Hall who BOS got as a steal at the deadline but for the most part giving up a 1st+prospect and maybe more is par for the course at the deadline if you want the best rental available

It's not gonna be a Mantha return (like what's proposed here) bc that was a massive overpay and he had a contract too. NSH will be competing with AZ and Kessel. I get that Forsberg is beloved and a solid forward, but you take sentiment out and look at the market and must conclude his rental return won't be a ransom

NSH wasn't selling at the last deadline, and Ellis isn't a rental.

Uh
30-whatever-he-is year old Nick Foligno got a 1st.
Filip Forsberg is at least twice, maybe three times, the player Foligno is.

If you put the sentiment into it he gets more than Gretzky

Besides that Kessel is old slow and fat and Forsberg is still in his prime.

Not saying Forsberg isn't good, but Poile has been without a chair lately when the music stops.

This is not the same as a Mantha return. Theres a significant difference between Vrana who is/was an established top 6 forward and Lavoie who has never played an NHL game

The Forsberg trade here might be a bit on the optimistic side with an extra 2nd added on top of a 1st+prospect, but I dont think its that far off from historical TDL returns for a player of Forsberg's caliber
