Tried to base the trade off of Tampa's trade at last years TDL

The Islanders aren't going for back to back Cups and may not be willing to pay what the lightning paid.

That doesn’t even get you Letang without retention. It would start with Dobson, Bellows, and a 1st for Letang with 50% retention. And even that’s probably not enough for the pens given you’re in the same division.

I think to trade a top 20 defenseman to a divisional rival, the starting price is what Chicago traded for Jones.

Not really. You want an elite top pair RHD that plays 25+ minutes per game. Is almost a ppg defenseman. Plays all situations. And you want the other team to retain 50% of his cap hit making him only a 3.625 cap hit. It’s comical to believe he’d cost any less.
Letang > Seth Jones
Seth Jones without retention got a top 15 pick, another 1st round pick, a 2nd round pick and a top RHD prospect that’s nhl ready.
So a late 1st, a bubble prospect, and a top RHD prospect that’s nhl ready is on the low side of what Letang would return.

Except you are forgetting that Jones was traded at 27 years old with one year left on his contract while Letang is 34 years old and will only play 25 games for the isles at the max after the TDL.

Also Jones was only traded to be resigned long term which the isles will not do with Letang

I didn’t forget anything. Letang at 34 is better than Jones at 27. Letang is also on a better contract and also having 50% of that contract retained. The pens have no reason to trade Letang. In fact they are working on an extension with him.
Letang is twice the defenseman Savard is. So it’s going to be more than similar to what Columbus got for Savard.

You can't say moving forward Letang at 34 in the last stage of his career holds more value than Jones at 27 who is in his prime. No non Pen fan would agree with you.

Right now he does. Seth Jones is coming off 2 subpar seasons. Letang is still almost a PPG RHD that plays all situations and plays 25+ minutes per night.

Jones played on a dysfunctional team last year that is defensively minded while Letang plays on a offense oriented team. Context matters.

No it doesn’t lol. If you suck on a bad team your value goes down, not up. And Seth Jones isn’t as good as Letang defensively either. Letang has been top 10 in Norris voting in 7 of the last 10 years. Not to mention the pens d Corp was pretty much a mess last year with injuries. We had POJ as a top pair d with Letang and Ahl scrubs like Czuczman and Yannick Weber in the top 4. Yet Letang is still elite. Whereas, Seth Jones by your own admission needs to play with good players to be good 🤷‍♂️

The majority of points for a defenseman comes from assists. Last year Letang had 37% of his assists as powerplay assists and 63% at even strength. Jones has 26% of his assists as powerplay assists and 74% comes at even strength. The increase of points for Letang comes on the powerplay and the Penguins have a far superior powerplay than the Bluejackets. When you look at production between defensemen you have to look where it is coming from.

You can try to baffle with BS and cherry pick stats all you want, but it doesn’t help your case, it only hurts your case. So thanks for proving my point. Letang is better than Jones in all situations and Seth Jones really sucks on the power play. 🤷‍♂️
