??? They would have been under the cap the whole time.

The Canes definitely did some over thinking.
If we kept Faulk as our own rental, we wouldn’t have signed Gardiner and probably don’t trade for one of Skjei or Vatanen.

Well I mean, they're paying Krug and Faulk 13 million to do what Petro himself can do. So cap wise they'd be fine.

Same. Personal feelings between Armstrong and Petro/Petro's agent are the only way to explain it. I didn't mind when he traded away Edmundson (and tbh renting Faulk could have been a good move if they didn't do the extension) but in hindsight he wasted his time and assets if the end result was to have Scandella in the same role that Eddy was filling. And they were always going to run Dunn out of town... should be fun to see what he does in Seattle. Now we pray that they don't run Perunovich out of town in a few years. Gonna need someone to move the puck when the rest of the defense is old and crusty.

In regards to Dunn, was he ever going to work in St. Louis? I don't know if it was a Berube thing or what, but it honestly always felt like a change of scenery was necessary.

No, I don't think they were ever going to commit money and top 4 time to Dunn. He slaughtered his 3rd pair minutes here but they only seemed to care about the mistakes which were admittedly concerning. Defense is a weird thing though, I think Dunn can end up being a Devon Toews type of player if he is given the trust/role. Great skater that commits to offense as a form of defense - that wasn't going to fly under Berube.

He didn't overthink it. He over ego-ed it. Plain and simple.

And Dunn would have worked just fine with the Blues. Not at all sure how anyone imagines otherwise.
