You could have drafted Vasilevskiy 1st overall but you chose to draft the man, the myth, the legend, Nail Yakupov. Stings doesn’t it

That Tampa Bay trade is so bad for Edmonton, dont you know that that 7th will be used to select Wayne Gretzky's prodigy?

Ah yes, Connor Leon McGretzky will something like 200th overall to the Edmonton Oilers and the Oilers will become a dynasty once again.

I mean, how do you end up screwing up that badly. The Oilers had access to the entire draft table and they chose Nail Yakupov? Vasilevski, Hellebuyck, Forsberg, and Turbo are all better and should have gone lightyears before Yakupov. And those were just a couple just off the top of my head. Just imagine a core of McDavid, Draisaitl, Vasilevski, and Nurse.

:Sob: more Oilers related tragedy in that 2012 draft, Griffin Reinhart was selected after Yak, and they later blew the farm trading the first-round pick that turned into Mathew Barzal to get those magic beans :Sob:

Absolutely ridiculous hindsight 20/20 comment

Every single person on this website would have taken yakupov 1st he was an incredibly electric prospect with all the tools and competitiveness etc.

Also Nail's D-1 scoring rate was historic

I scouted Filip as much as I could on early swedish youtube and junior tournaments and didn't even consider taking him over even Galchenyuk

Who also seemed a star. Rightly. What a prospect!

Fill one of my fav players ever too: I was very biased

Strange things happen. Idk. Drafts can be weird 🤷‍♂️

I actually didn't realize I made that pun until now, but that is kind of funny. But if we are looking at Edmonton's goalie situation regarding your other post, I would say they should have gone with the elite goalies that were available instead of Yakupov. I get that Yakupov was an elite offensive talent before he got drafted, but a team can't be all about offense, and that seems to be the direction that Edmonton is heading towards. Given the choice between Yakupov and either Hellebuyck or Vasilevskiy, just looking at stats, Vasilevskiy has had a .900 save percentage at least in so many different spots I lost track as he rarely ever is below .900. For Hellebuyck, the only time he was ever below a .900 save percentage was when he played for Team Michigan in 2011. With the Sarnia Sting in the 2 years prior to being drafted, he put up 101 pts and 69 pts in 65 and 42 games respectively. Not bad point totals, but those are outliers compared to everywhere else he played. You could chalk that up to not staying in one place for a consistent amount of time. Prior to being drafted, his point totals took swings from between .500 ppg to about 2.00 ppg. He was not as consistent statistically as Hellebuyck or Vasilevskiy were with their statistics. In hindsight, I truly believe that the Oilers should have taken a goalie at 1st overall in 2012, but that is just my opinion, so I digress. My opinion may be wrong, it may be right, who cares. One thing is for sure, and that is that the lightning won the 2012 draft.

Even Slater Koekkoek was a better pick than Yakapov

In all fairness that TB's 2nd pick of the 1st round. As a Detroit fan I hoping that history repeats its self.

I mean it’s not like they missed out on much. Forsberg is the best non-goalie from that draft, and the next 3 players after Yakupov were Murray, Galchenyuk, and Reinhart. Only one of those is an NHL player, and he’s a 3rd pairing D.

You’re hoping that Simon Edvinsson ends up being a 3rd pair defenseman? Sticking Out Tongue

The Oilers also coulda had Matthew Tkachuk instead of hating him. Pulju isn’t a bad player by any means but he’s not a good 4th overall selection.

If that means Cossa will be the best goalie in the NHL in a couple of years I'm ok with it.

If the Oilers get a good goalie and a nice backup goalie. Yes, this is a playoff contender and possible a Stanley Cup contender.
