Points per game in D+3 and D+4 seasons combined (Suzuki's full NHL career):

1.11 points per game = 91 points per 82 games / 50 goals per 82 games = Auston Matthews
1.00 points per game = 82 points per 82 games / 24 goals per 82 games = Mitchell Marner
0.75 points per game = 62 points per 82 games / 21 goals per 82 games = Willy Nylander
0.64 points per game = 52 points per 82 games / 18 goals per 82 games = Nicky Suzuki

That's probably the most unbiased statistical comparison you will find in this comments section.

The two guys making $10 million were 30 + 39 points per season ahead of Suzuki at his age.

And they've both improved to a 100+ point pace since then (doubling Suzuki's production).

Now lets focus on the Habs since Suzuki is their #1 center (not Toronto's #3 center).

Comparing a Leafs system who don't play defense to the Habs system who plays defense first... seems fair

Meaning hands will be tied to make moves during the off season or in season for a while wink

I agree for this year, but next off season I think they will find cap space

Pretty sure if a player is a dead contract he doesn’t count as cap in the offseason since Tampa was at 98mil during the offseason before their infamous playoff run and that’s definitely over the offseason cap limit

Goals Against Per Game (2020-21 Season):

2.64 = Toronto (7th in NHL)
2.95 = Montreal (18th in NHL)

With all do respect ... you should have looked that up before chirping.

With all due respect you are talking about the season.... we dont care about that here. Playoffs only!

Again, please do a quick fact check before commenting:

Toronto had a 2.00 goals against average in the playoffs.
Montreal had a 2.45 goals against average in the playoffs.

Regarding the Montreal vs Toronto series specifically:

Toronto had a 2.00 goals against average in the series.
Montreal had a 2.57 goals against average in the series.

It's possible to win a series while being outscored by the opponent.

Montreal did just that. Congrats on winning.

I voted no for now as he's still a bit unproven entity with the career high of 41 points, but he could very well develop into something great.

Now the contract is there, now it's time to earn it.

Can't really use 41 points in a shortened season. It's pro-rated to 60 points, which sounds very different.

I do think most players should be bridged. Too many young players getting too much too soon, but every once in a while you have to go all in on someone. I'm okay with Suzuki being one of those.

Even if Suzuki never takes another step offensively, his defense combined with his current offensive skill set this is more than worth it.

The Leafs outplayed Montreal all around, it doesn't change the fact that Montreal plays defense first and Toronto plays offense first.

Your only allowed to be over a certain percentage in the off season. 10 percent allowed. Shea Weber will count towards that every off season till his contract expires.

Similar to the Nico contract, but slightly more $ and an extra year. A+ signing by MB.

Yeah what's the off-season rule, teams are aloud to go 10% over but does that include injured players

I'm not sure about the rule, last year Tampa were at 98mil which is 20% over the cap, including injured players

It’s nice to have your 22-year-old #1 centre locked up for 9 years, but I don’t think he’s done enough yet to warrant this salary. The sample size is too small. Maybe they were afraid that if they waited until next summer he’d get an offer sheet, but they could have at least waited until the Olympic break to see what he does this season.

I think its a bit of a gamble, but likely not a terrible one. I don't think he's worth this yet, I think he's worth likely about a mil less (perhaps about 6.5). But I think taking the gamble on an improving guy in his early 20s, to improve a bit more is reasonable, when the risk of not doing it, is he takes another step this year and asks for 9+.

For an example, apparently the Marner camp offered the Leafs 9 million for 8 years BEFORE the 2018/2019 season. That sounds crazy to me to have considered that after he came off a 69 point season (and 9 points in 7 playoff games). Of course one year later, they damn well wish they had signed him for it, as he went and had a 94 point season and the Leafs gave him 10.9 for 6 years...

Still, I would have thought they could keep it at 7 or less.

I wish I could have voted "okay", neither good nor bad...

Eh it makes it not terrible. He is good defensively, but he has not had a single Selke vote. He isn't a stud defensively, just good. Compare to a guy like Ryan O'Reilly who got a tad less as a UFA and had been in the Selke conversation and was more proven offensively.

If he doesn't take another step offensively (or for that matter defensively, into the stud defensive forward category) this deal is not terrible, but it is a slight over pay. He'd be more in the low to mid 6's I'd argue

Pretty sure that was with deadline acquisitions which they didn't have in the offseason

They only picked up Savard at the deadline and his contract was under double retention, so a little over 1mil, I guess that there's a rule that allows teams to go over if some players career is done

If Suzuki gets 7.875Mx8 then how does Tkachuk get more than 8Mx8?

He only thinks he should because his ego is bigger.

Huge risk. Much better signing than Tkachuk, but still... 8m for a guy with a career high 41 pts is hard to swallow. My vote for now is no, but it could change in the next 2-3 years.

41 in 56 games though, that's around a 60 point pace

Plus he scored at a 60 point pace in 22 playoff games last season as well.
