Preseason Prospect Pool Assessment

Created by: CoopsTroops
Team: 2021-22 Tampa Bay Lightning
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 25, 2021
Published: Oct. 12, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Previous assessment: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/2448682

Explanation of Tiers:
- LW: I believe they can be part of a 23 man NHL roster in the future. (Anywhere from McDavid to playing 1 career game)
- C: Coin flip as to whether they will belong in the LW or RW column.
- RW: They need to find another gear in their development to see NHL games, but possess enough talent to the point where it's possible.
- LD: Top out at the AHL/ECHL level. It is still possible to get to the NHL, but they really need to find some extra gears.
- RD: Have not seen enough of them to make a judgement. Probably would fall in RW or LD column.

Additions:
- 2021 Draft Picks
- Darren Raddysh (signed as FA)

Subtractions:
- Ryan Lohin (Not issued QO)

Misc. Comments:
- Finley skates too well for his size. He will play eventually.
- Thompson is the best RHD in the system and impresses me every time I see him play. Could not keep him out of the "Future NHLer" column any longer.
- Ryfors is starting the year in Syracuse as expected, but I will likely need to put him in "Future NHLer" column before the year ends.
- I was too harsh on McDonnell in the end of season assessment, so he's in holding pattern in the RW column.
- Cajkovic is a name who I may have rising throughout the season.
- I am going to call this a make-or-break year for Shalagin. Either he really takes a step forward and puts up big numbers in the VHL or drops to the LD column.
- Raddysh and Katchouk will likely no longer be part of prospect assessments going forward as they should graduate to full-time NHLers starting tonight.

Great list once again. My question about this list is in regards to Nick Perbix. I know some people are high on him and others are not but what makes you think he likley won’t be an NHL player? He seems to put up good numbers at St. Cloud.

I watched a fair bit of Perbix last season in the NCAA tournament and while he was one of the best, if not the best, defensemen on St. Cloud State I did not think he ever really convincingly took control of the game when he was on the ice. If he decides to join Syracuse after his senior year at SCSU is over and looks comfortable right out of the gate, then I'll likely have him in the C coulmn.

I’d certainly like to see him in Syracuse next year. I must say I was slightly disappointed watching Schmidt in the prospect tournament as well as in the preseason and as of now, I agree with your placement of him. Im hoping he can improve his skating and foot speed and eventually crack the top 6, but with Tampa’s track record of struggling to draft and develop big defenseman, im not overly optimistic. What are your thoughts on Schmidt and what he needs to do to be a future NHLer?

You don't think Duke is a sure bet at making the show? I got the feeling he was only a matter of time before he shows up.

Schmidt just needs to develop. He was far from a finished product when drafted. Time will tell, but a bump in scoring this year now that he's in the OHL on Kitchener with McDonnell would be a good sign things are trending in the right direction.

I felt I couldn't put one of Fortier and Duke in the "Future NHLer" column and leave the other one out. They look to play a similar game and their sizes due make me want to see it before I believe it.

Fortier was semi-quiet in the prospect tournament, but then dropped a hat trick in the preseason 🤷. With BB, Raddysh, and Katchouk out of the way in Syracuse we should be looking for a nice bump in production from Fortier. He could end the season in "Future NHLer" while I probably won't move Duke unless his freshman year at Michigan is either great or horrendous.
